Installing Drupal

I have an existing web server with a website in the document root. I would like to install Drupal and have all my Drupal stuff inside it's own directory like /var/www/html/drupal/ while the existing web site should remain in /var/www/html/. Is something like this possible to do? How would I go about installing Drupal in this fashion?

Recently I was posed a question of if I could remove MySQL authentication information from the PHP code of Drupal (I believe this is in settings.php?) I am relatively new to PHP and web-development in general so this may be the reason I was unable to locate any solutions on the web so far.

I have been developing different websites using drupal. Now i want to deploy the final version on a webserver (windows 2003).
I developed it on my local machine with Apachetraid and Drupal 6.19.
Now i don't know where to start and how to direct the domain i purchased to my local machine (looks dumb right)
I need some direction then i will work my way around

i am using a windows vista.
i have installed d7 on my server (i use webfusion as my host) for the first time using a old domain name to get it up and running this all went well but now i wanted to create a real site so i uploaded it to my server using the new domain name
i then go to the new web address and start the install process it passes all the installation correctly the installation bar goes to the end correctly but when it comes to the configure site part it stops and gives the http 500 error.

I'm a complete newbie concerning Drupal...
is it possible to create a website using Drupal on local computer (xammp) and then upload it to the hosting or is it only possible to create website directly on the hosting after you install drupal on the server?

Is it better to use Drupal 6.2 or Drupal 7, as I saw that many of Modules and Themes have only been developed for 6.2 for now.
