Installing Drupal

I think the new installation facility in Drupal 7 for modules is fantastic.

However... is this the 'best' way to install modules for 7? I've just been auditing a site, and I see plenty of temporary files from the installs in the temp directory on the host server. Are there other things that could go wrong here, rather than uploading the modules via FTP?

I'm completely new to Drupal so forgive me if I've done something stupid!

I navigate to www.mydomain.com/install.php but find a page titled "No profiles available" and telling me that:

We were unable to find any installation profiles. Installation profiles tell us what modules to enable and what schema to install in the database. A profile is necessary to continue with the installation process.

Any ideas what has gone wrong?

I'm a new comer to this forum and hope you'll have the patience to help a newbie.I've tried to install Drupal-7.2 on my Mandriva 2010 distro but this is the message I got when I tried to create the database:

error:'Can't connect to local Mysql server through socket '/var/lib/mysql.soc' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket : '/var/lib/mysql.soc' exists !

Please do help me to fix this probem. Thank you.

I installed drupal- fresh install of 6.22. But I got a 500 error.
I removed the .htaccess file from the main directory. Everything runs fine.

The file /sites/default/files/.htaccess is running fine, and i have left it where it is.

Is this a safe course of action?

For some unknown reason, my database on my Drupal site became corrupted. I hired someone to create the site and am a real novice, though I can usually get around when needed. I hadn't been in it for 2 months, thus my comment, I have no idea what happened. :( I believe its version 7.x as my developer had me change hosts so that it used the latest mysql and other backend programs. ALso, the data below, the identifying info I changed, though the real data is out there for the world to see if they go to the site.

I want to use MYSQL but Drupal keeps forcing me to use SQLlite. I

Any idea why ?

The mysql server is running.
Wordpress can find it.
