how to Change file permissions so that it is writable by the web server

I can't get mySQL to run even though I have the correct password.

I had drupal6 running on a website and foolishly tried to upgrade from 6.16 to 6.22 by uninstalling 6.16 and then installing 6.22. I was having simple directing problems and I tried fixing things in myphpadmin. I deleted my root directory and then things took a turn for the bad. mySQL could no longer run and I have no idea how to fix it.

I've tried reinstalling phpmyadmin and everything related to mySQL and still do not have any luck getting it to run. I know mySQL is running because when I type in:

I am involved in moving the current Drupal 5.x site onto a new server. When I moved all my system, it seems to work. The user login form points to the previous domain name so that it moves to the previous server. How can I fix it?

In general, What tasks do you think are requisite for moving the Drupal 5.x onto a new server?

I have searched everywhere on how to setup mamp for multi-site so I cand develop locally before moving to the live server, and cannot find anything definitive.

Could someone who's been through this before, please outline the steps for:

1. Setting up Locally using MAMP on OSX 10.6
2. Moving dev sites to production server

Whenever im trying to install a new module on my working drupal site i always tested it on a local web server. I tried to install jQuery countdown module and its repositories/needed modules e.g. date, migrate, ctools, etc. and it worked perfect on my local host. But when i tried to install same modules on my online working drupal site it kind of messed up. Modules does'nt confirm neatly when you enable them... pushing me to a blank page and my drupal encounters errors when i install and enable a module and another and another...
