Installing Drupal

I'm confused.
Can public files and private files not be used in the same drupal installation?
Depending on the content, I want to be able to choose the file upload should be private or public.
I created a content type: Gallery with file upload: Private.
I have also created a content type: Image with file upload: Public.
But when I chose Private local files served by Drupal in the file system, it looks like I can not upload to a public directory.
In Drupal 6 devolopment it seems like I can only use one of the methods.
But can it be true?

Too late for multi-site configuration?

I bought a shared web host plan, installed Drupal, and themes, put in some content, and I’m up and running. I’m using the registrar’s name-server with Google mail servers. I bought more domains through the same registrar because I am starting a much more complicated unrelated site. I say unrelated but I would like to sync some database info from the first site with the second. The first site would have very few records.

Because the second site is a brand new crowdsourcing project, I am considering OpenIdeal. I will probably start with a social media theme like Journal Crunch because I need a quick prototype and I want to play around with the content and appearance. The circumstances of the project could possibly mean acquiring tens of thousands of users very rapidly with a limited number of users actually contributing. It also has a potential commercial aspect with a limited product line. If it does grow rapidly as hoped, I would be open to migrating to Pantheon simply because they seem to have the experience.

I read “Alternate installation method using links for your Domains and Drupal Installations” instructions but not yet knowing how all of this fits together is problematic.

I have a complicated or simple issue. I want to copy my companies main site to my development domain however I have been having troubles with the transition.

Here are the following steps I took to duplicate:
MAIN SITE:
1. Exported the database through Backup and Migrate
2. Copied the main directory (/images/ /pdf/ etc.)

iv made a website using drupal, but i want to copy this website to a new domain.

i first copied the drupal 7, set it up and added the database, but didnt have the modules etc..

so when i copied all the information and replaced it.

it keeps giving the error:

PDOException: SQLSTATE[28000] [1045] Access denied for user 'sga931'@'localhost' (using password: YES) in lock_may_be_available() (line 167 of /home/sites/al-mamun.co.uk/public_html/connect/includes/lock.inc).

any ideas!!! i have had this problem for long time, have no idea.

Who has any experience (and would like to share it) for single sign on and content sharing across 5 different Drupal sites on 3 domains?

I can not get fade to work in Colorbox when the images are swapped. Changing the elastic or fade makes no changes. In some answers on this issue indicated that I need to enable 'sync'. But I can not see a function with the possibility of activating 'sync'. Neither in Colorbox or view.
