Installing Drupal

I have installed 4.7.0 b4 which works fine, however i want to use 4.6.5 for now because there are more modules.

Every time I view a site install of 4.6.5 via http://localhost the page displays as a white page only, with some text.

It appears to be in one frame and there are obvious header errors as i can see header code on the generated page.

Any ideas what is going on here. I am fairly certain i have done everything as I should.

Is there something i need to do that differs from an install of 4.7.0 b4?

I was able to get drupal 4.6.5 installed into my account at Netfirms, but when I pointed a browser at it, I got a 500 Internal Server Error. After taking a look at it, their tech support said its probably a problem with the .htaccess file because Netfirms only supports password protection of folders and custom error pages through .htaccess.

My questions: Is there a simple way to make Drupal work with a more limited (or even without) .htaccess file? Is it time to find another host? (I actually like Netfirms otherwise, and their tech support is reasonably responsive)

I have a feeling the Drupal/CivicSpace cron jobs are not running. How can I check?
