The Trinidad Guardian, one of 3 popular newspapers in Trinidad, re-launched their website on New Years Day 2009 using Drupal 5. The site has a simple design done by their in-house graphics designer Ms. Maxie Navarro. The Drupal developer behind it, Shivan Jaikaran, would like to share his techniques as a tech case study.
Why was Drupal chosen?
The old site was a plain html site and did not provide much (if any) flexibility in terms of multiple updates, RSS, scheduled workflow or fostering a community website with features such as comments. Drupal was decided upon internally as the CMS of choice to overcome such drawbacks. It was imperative that the editors be allowed to update the site simultaneously, remotely and without much programming skills....features that were not possible with the old site.
BuyandCreate.com is an online fabric store for apparel, interior, and commercial fabrics. I have a little over 100 fabrics on it now, but will eventually get it closer to 1,000.
Modules:
Ubercart for a very straightforward use of ecommerce + favourite nodes, and Views.
I would like to preface this by saying a couple things about myself to provide some context for this article. I was able to develop Dreamsocket.com over the course of about four months with a little development and testing over another month while development on our first product was wrapping up. This is truly a testament to Drupal and Ubercart and the great community that exists around both. I say this because this project encompassed many firsts for me personally. It was the first big project I had worked on after college and my first experience with Drupal and web programming in general. Previously, I had tried to stay as far away from HTML and website development as possible, so the four months of time I spent on the site included a month or so devoted to research. It has been a great experience though, and I would (and will) recommend Drupal to anyone looking to build a professional website no matter their level of expertise in the field.
