Multi-Lingual site - Cape to Kruger Golf Tours

I just finished setting up Golf Ferien in Südafrika, which supports content in English, German and Dutch. It was pretty easy to set this up in Drupal 6 (6.10), apart from a few smaller issues around the internationalization, most of which could be solved by some searching on drupal.org.

The Buying Exchange Rebuild & Relaunch in Drupal 6

The new website for The Buying Exchange has been relaunched using Drupal 6.

The Buying Exchange was originally developed in the early days of Drupal 5 to negotiate better deals between small businesses and suppliers by leveraging the group purchasing power of the website's user base.

In early 2009, it was rapidly becoming evident that the needs of TBE had outgrown the original website. Brian Vuyk Web Design and Development was contracted to redevelop the website in a new format prioritizing user-friendliness and modern design.

Design

When the client approached us for the redevelopment, one of their larger complaints was that the theme on the original site was somewhat monotone and flat. They wanted the new design to be more vibrant & eye-catching.

The client also wanted the new website to be very intuitive. To this end, we have tried to make the controls fairly simple, obvious, and readable.

Module Choices

The Buying Exchange utilizes a relatively small set of contrib modules:

  • CCK (With a few field modules such as Filefield & ImageField)
  • Views
  • Imagecache
  • Admin Menu
  • Advanced Forum
  • BUEditor
  • Pathauto
  • Poormanscron
  • Term Node Count

BoxcarTravels.com

Why it was built

Travel sites are extremely popular and common on the internet (from personal blogs to mega websites like lonely planet). However as travelers we identified one major weakness, that finding information is difficult and unintuitive (you know like drupal admin interface). The primary design goal was therefore: make content easy to access/navigate/find.

How it was built

It is a custom theme with a heavy number of contrib modules.

  • Layout is handled by a combination of panels, template files, and views.
  • The main country navigation on the right is taxonomy menu w/ some custom redirecting on the paths.
  • The user block (only shown for logged in users) is mainly views (were loving the new global: Custom Text field !)(!)
  • The country specific headers (viewable if you select a country on the right navigation) is a custom block which reads arguments from the URL (not an ideal solution, currently being reworked)
  • The node create/edit forms use alot of css to clean them up plus Hierarchical Select

So in short the most important modules besides views and cck are: Hierarchical Select, ImageCache, Panels, and Taxonomy Menu.

But there is no content

Newbie to drupal

Hello all,

I have created the site www.wincfood.com with php but at the recommendation of a friend I have decided to check out Drupal and what it is all about. Does anyone have any recommendations on which version to start with or any first time tips for a newbie. I look forward to talking to all of you :)
