Post installation

I have tried quite hard to find a way to have some content on top of my my home page (just like drupal.org and others) in a different colour which simply explains what my site is all about(followed by the normal stories that are promoted to the front page), without success.

I would really appreciate anyone who could help me with this since I don't really know where to look. Am I meant to make any changes to the theme I am using (xTemplate using 4.3.2), any of the module files or the includes, or the stories themselves?

a node shows all terms assigned but they are not

Looking for some verification or recommendations:

1) Would someone please point to (or help me write) a definitive explanation regarding the differences between

A) CVS - Files currently listed as CVS in the download section

B) Headwhich may or may not be another name for "A" if it is slightly different than the obvious CVS download where
is it located as a downloadable set of files - or is it?

C) Release candidate/RC which may also be the same as the current CVS or may actually be behind the current CVS?
Is http://www.drupal.org/drupal/drupal-4.4.0-rc.tgz updated to the current CVS or are these two different 'animals?'

D) Branch(es) location where certain of these components may be located? While seeing references to modules and the RC being in the 4.4 Branch it isn't clear exactly where this is located.

E) Patches how can a site administrator identify required patches if they've just installed one of the above verisons? How can they subscribe to a notification so they are notified when essential patches are released?

Adrian provided touched on some of these here: http://drupal.org/node/view/6060#9084 and I will edit and write up a consolidation or update of the answers I receive or am pointed to. Seems like a starting point for the documentation that I'm interested in helping with for newbies. If they (we) can't get a handle on the various starting points for installing a Drupal system it is hard to address other orientation and specific questions.

I just installed Drupal 4.4 RC and it is running.

I created a static content and I need to add it to navig menu (just like "project" link here at drupal.org). How to do that?

I found Drupal very interesting, clean and easy to use! Thank you for it!

ps - can I install 4.4 RC or you suggest me to install previous release for deployment?

i'm building the taxonomy/pages users will see and one question arises - can the drupal forms for page, story, forum, comments, etc. a) allow users to add/suggest a new category and b) include open text fields for users to enter a list of terms not yet listed (i.e. an investigator finds a new lead/suspect and wants to name specifics as part of the page/story classification/meta x,y,z) - i just need to build an open text field into the form - how do i do this?
