I'm pretty much a Drupal novice. I installed 5.1 with Fantastico on a host server quite a while back. I've added no contributed modules, and the site works fine for me. The host server people tell me I now need to update to 6.x because the "php is hitting us hard." Fantastico has a 6.4 version on my server but when I tried to update, it essentially became a big mess. So a server technician restored my site to the old configuration and told me to update the site manually right away. I've read some of the negative comments about Fantastico, so I'm aware that many Drupal people believe I shouldn't have used it in the first place. But, well, that's in the past.
I have a huge amount of content on the site, and I don't want to lose it.
I've been reading about the upgrading process, and I have a home directory and sql database backups on my computer. I have downloaded Drupal 6.5 on my computer, and I know where the files need to go on the server. I have read about the process and watched the screen video.
Here are my questions:
Is there anything different I need to do because my 5.1 Drupal was downloaded from Fantastico?
Is it true that I need to actually delete all the old 5.1 files before I add the new files? In other words, I don't replace the files, right?
