Upgrading Drupal

I am a beginner Drupal user. In the process of downloading/enabling modules and upgrading to 6.13 I think I lost everything. I have been working so far to figure out Drupal and it seems every step I take, I end up 16 steps behind. I need some help and I apologize ahead of time if I don't understand everything. I read through other issues with the upgrade but I am scared to try anything in case more goes wrong. The specific problem if anyone has time to help is this:

After upgrading from 5.x to 6.x, I write a new article, and it inserts as VID = 0 (it should be 138). And says duplicate entry, and doesn't update.

Where does it grab vid last insert from? I thought it was an auto_increment or primary key (and the cardinality is 78 in node table, even though I have 138 + articles).
Ideas?

I'm wondering if I should edit sequences table and change vocabulary_vid to 139? Is sequences table still used in Drupal6?

I just updated drupal to 6.13. everything seems to have updated ok, but when i went to the admin page, I got tons of duplicate entry warnings!

Is there an easy way to fix this?

What did I do wrong?

I bought a place on a hosting server & in its panel it had Drupal version 6.10 which I installed !!

Now I 've seen I must upgrade it to 6.13 !! I have downloaded the version ... but I need u to tell me step by step what to do ...

e.g.
" unzip it -> place it "there" --> & place that file there " and so on ...

Please be specified in order to make it easier for me ...
