Failed attempt to upgrade from Drupal 5.* (or 4.*) web-site

Dear Drupal users,

Firstly, thank you for the wonderful product and services. [1]

(The following has a possible relation to "Really struggling with updating an old D5 website" of 25 Jan 2012 by Bunzer at http://drupal.org/node/1416552 )

I have reached a total roadblock in my attempts to set up a live-testbed [2] on my own Ubuntu/Xfce desk-top computer.

Auto Installation of Module/Theme from URL in Drupal 7.10

Most of the Drupal user will notice a change in Drupal 7.10 upgrade that the option to install Module and theme from URL will disappear. This option is still available but in different place.

This option is moved to

Admin > Reports > Available Updates

and you can see a combined link to install theme or module via URL in drupal 7.10.

This is very useful option for quick Theme and Module Installation

Really struggling with updating an old D5 website

4 years ago, I built a small website using Drupal 5.7. I added Image, and Image Assist modules, as well as the TinyMCE editor (and CAPTCHA), so the main content could be updated like a blog. It's been working fine ever since, but I have never done any code updates.

I've recently transferred this website to my shared server, and I am increasingly concerned about its update status (i.e. it may be vulnerable). So, after a long break from Drupal, I looked into updating the code.

What a nightmare! Apparently, we're on version 7 now, and all the separate packages need updating incrementally. Okay, so I get started, my first task being updating all the modules...

Apparently, TinyMCE is superceded by WYSIWYG, and I need to update Image/Image Assist to version 2. But, although it's not too difficult to install WYSIWYG, any editor I install refuses to work with Image Assist, and updates to Image, Image Assist, and JQuery modules cause problems with the images in existing pages.

I've tried different combinations of updates, restored the database several times, and reverted different combinations of modules to their original versions, and that's even without attempting a Drupal core update. 24 hours later, I'm nearly ready to give up :-(

Can anyone give me advice on the best way to bring the code up to date, please?

Content/Users that was added during an update period?

We have a huge database for a website, that we are porting to Drupal 7 from Drupal 6. Since it's so big it will take at least a couple of days to set it up for live. In the mean time the Drupal 6 version is still operational since the client does not want to put it offline even for 5 minutes.

Because of this we will be getting new content and new users. Is there a way to migrate the nodes and users from the D6 to D7 after the update was complete?

7.10 upgrade makes all links go to 404 not found

I searched everywhere for the same issue, so it may just be some setting in my local install. However, I hope if there is someone else who is having the same problem that they'd benefit from an answer.

I have done the upgrade from 7.8 to 7.10 following the instructions religiously. I use my editor's file compare to make sure that my settings and htaccess are also updated but also contain my custom information. Afterwards I ran the update.php script which looks to have changed only 2 tables. All of that went well as usual.

Drupal 6.22 or 7.x, what is best?

Hello

I'd like to know some advantages of the 6.22 version over the 7.x.

And also, why is 7.x good when compared to 6.22?

I'd like to know why you think one is better than the other? Any help is appreciated.
