Drupal 8.x

I am working on some form api functionality in where there is an entity_autocomplete that populates based on a view. I am trying to attach some additional ajax/submit functionality to this so that once an entity is selected, it submits the ajax request/form to do some additional things. 

(For example, if a certain entity type is selected from the autocomplete, additional fields show up). #submit doesn't seem to work on entity_autocomplete, and you can't rebuild form_state (or set it) in the ajax callback, so I am trying to find another way to do what I need.

I have been building my sites on Drupal since 4.7.

I'm not a back end developer.

I learned HTML/CSS a long time ago, then PHP and Mysql when starting Drupal.

Recently almost all of my sites have been built on Drupal 7.

Some have been Drupal 8 but because of the complexities of having to install Composer I've tried to stay away.

Now drupal 7 is coming to EOL. Even acquia have told me they don't support anymore.

This is leaving me no choice but to go with Drupal 8 or 9.

I've been using DrupalVM on my old laptop to create a migration from my Drupal 7 site to a Drupal 8 site. I'm running into several roadblocks but all in all I was able to run my script that does a clean site install in Drupal 8 and another script that migrates most of the D7 data over, one Drush migrate-import line at a time.

(The public-html folder has many other websites, then in dev-dgb folder within the web folder the drupal files are)
