drupal capabilities and comparison to vb drupal

I'm very interested in what I've been reading about Drupal. However, I'm also intrigued by vb drupal. Is there a strong advantage to using one setup versus the other?

I have a few questions about the drupal functionality.

I'm interested in posting/managing articles (and links to past articles) on one of my web pages. Can I do this with drupal?

I also want to have a users forum (currently using phpbb), and the ability for the users to have their own blogs (seperate area from the articles I post).

freelancer: is this the CMS for me and my small/med sized clients?

Hello,
I’m a freelance website designer and college student, and hoping Drupal will bit a good fit for what I’m trying to do. I’ve recently had to turn down several jobs because I don’t have a full fledged CMS ready to offer clients.

I have a number of needs, but three important points are that (1) most of my clients are small to medium sized businesses in various fields, and (2) I create valid XHTML/CSS/table-less/semantically coded websites. So the CMS will HAVE to play nice with my front end code! (3) I’m a complete newbie to PHP/MySql, and content management systems.. But I’ve taken some time off this quarter to dig in and learn!

General Needs:

  • A *restrictive* WYSIWYG interface for clients and their staff to make day to day updates to the site. *restrictive* in that I’ll need to be able to set permissions and restrictions in terms of WHAT, and HOW they can make changes to the site. (maintaining the color scheme, consistent fonts, etc..)
  • Multiple blogs and comments
  • Forums
  • template based (and works with my valid XHTML/CSS)
  • forms that input data to the database
  • supports multiple languages
  • stylable admin panel
  • short URLs
  • subscribe/unsubscribe mailing lists
  • making the site/forums/blogs/etc searchable

eCommerce needs:

  • shopping cart
  • paid monthly membership subscriptions, with password log-ins
  • online transactions
  • rotating banner ads

When its all said and done, I’d like the CMS to work for my clients in a way similar to the CMS that this site: http://www.modelvolume.com/ offers with their webdesign services. (click on their “quick tour” to preview their CMS).. anyhow, I’d like to create a product for my clients that is similar to that, and easy to use.

Also keep in mind that I’m enough of a newbie to this all, that I likely don’t KNOW what all I need!

Major Newb - Where Do I Begin?

I only have a little experience with HTML, CSS, XML, and Flash Actionscript. I'm primarily a graphic designer and hardly consider myself a programmer. I've been wanting to play around with CMS systems for quite some time. I'm really excited about Drupal after seeing some of the samples on your site. The sites look beautiful and are feature rich.

The only problem is that I have absolutely no idea how to get started. It looks like the documentation assumes that I've done similar installations in the past. I've never worked with a database or anything like ASP, PHP, etc.

Can we use Drupal at our office even though we use ASP?

I just read a great case study for a company that used Drupal for their collaborative knowledge sharing website.

I talked to some of the developers here and it seems that all our applications use the following setup:
Windows Server 2003
ASP.NET
MS SQL Server

It seems that our company will not be supporting PHP for at least another year. Can we still use Drupal here? If not, are there any products out there like Drupal for our platform?

I am new to CMS and is considering Drupal.

I am new to CMS and drupal. I am running my first website http://www.vrien-den.com and is considering implement a CMS into it.

I am currently running a phpbb forum and coppermine gallery. I am now considering Drupal or Joomla! as my first CMS.

I don't really need to retain my gallery, but i hope I can atleast retain the posts and members of my forum. If can, I hope I can use phpbb with Drupal. Is that possible? Any hacks / modules on that?

My major aim is to build a community site for my friends, family and some other peoples.

I wanted a site where people could:

- blog ( create their own blog, in short, a blog host ),
- profile page ( If possible ), messages system ( thought build-in? ),
- forum ( if can, I wish to retain my phpbb, or atleast the posts and members ),
- chatroom ( if can, completed with a block showing whose in the chatroom ),
- gallery ( atleast I need to allow my members to upload images, and if can media files too ),
- directory / links section ( I need to allow my members or visitors to submit links and I will approve or decline it ),
- vote / poll ( if can, only members can vote, or 1 vote per IP ).

under the same account / name / ID. Just like Friendster.

Is that possible for doing such a site in Drupal?

The major factor I turn to a CMS is because of the member system, where my members login once, and he/she can vote, blog, post messages, chat, submit links, upload photos, edit profile and etc using the same account, and login once only.

What Linux OS/MySql/PHP/Apache Versions do you use or recommend

I have been using drupal for almost a year and have like many others had big upand big downs with this wonderful package.

I am about to build a new drupal dedicated server an I am wondering what Linux Dist/MYSQL/PHP/APACHE versions people are using successfully or recommend. In particular for Drupal 4.6.4
