Before you start

I want to install drupal on my laptop running linux
does drupal run on linux ?

I have no experience with drupal.. I have been a long time user of joomla, but am looking to give drupal a spin on a new site i want to put together..

Im wondering if drupal has any extentions/modules/componets (dont know what they are called here in drupal) that will allow me to create a directory like dmoz, but is integrated with a paypal payment system to handle premium listings as an option from free listings..

Now i'm creating site fore a photo company. And i met a trouble on my way:

i don't know how to create a custom folders for my users. I need to create folders with names just like this: http://www.example.com/photos/user/a_b , when "a" - is the place where user from and "b" - is the date of upload.

Can you help me with this trouble? I'm hopin' so much...

I'm planing to switch two sites from "home made php" sites to Drupal. I'm looking for advises about leaving the actual site fully operationnal while preparing the new one with Drupal.

Is there any tips about installing Drupal in a subdirectory while I custumize Drupal and then moving it to the home WWW when ready ?

Any advises are welcome.

Hi experts,

on my drupal site I want to offer an area, where people can download softwarepatches. For three different applications, several patches should be listed (most actual on top ...). Basically it should be like the Module Download here on drupal.org.

Does anybody know, how this is realized here on the page or which module I should use for my purpose? Please give me a hint.
