Drupal 7.x

Whoever can point out fail-safe steps to update core (while preserving the sites under development within two multisite DBs) deserves an ovation.

• 11/06/09 - Site down for roughly 20min. I figured this was a fluke and gave them another chance.
• 2/18/10 - Site down. Since I was at a tradeshow, I couldn't follow the issue. The site was unavailable for about an hour
• 3/04/10 - Site down. Over 3 hours of downtime.

I've been running a multi-site install on a shared-host environment for a while, using drupal 6. It's installed on httpdocs>drupalroot. I wanted to check out Drupal 7, so I installed it openly under httpdocs. Now my multisites show errors like the following: "Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ARRAY, expecting '&' or T_VARIABLE or T_CONST in /home/creat74/public_html/drupalroot/sites/all/modules/imageapi/imageapi.module on line 161"

I'm a Drupal newbie and this is my first post. I've just taken over maintenance of a client's (messy) HTML/CSS/PHP/MySQL site. They want to re-do their site in the coming 6 months or so, and I'm pretty sure I want to build the new site on Drupal. I've just started working my way through the learning process. I have PHP/MySQL experience so it makes sense to me.

Requesting the creation of a user/developer group for the fantastic Studio Multimedia France 24 / RFI pen source modules for the france24.com site.

I have some unanswered questions below which I would invite people to give thoughts on as I will ALSO TRY to ANSWER them MYSELF as I experiment with these modules.

Is anyone actually using them?

Now what? :-
How do you get started with them? I've uploaded and installed all of them to my development site but now what?

How do I actually use these modules, maybe create new content using CCK?

How do I define page layouts and a facility for uploading content to them? For example,
Front page, article page, photo galleries etc.

I want to categorise my content, using taxonomy and list articles in a category in various boxes, e.g. entertainment, arts, history etc. I might want to make the listing of one box be conditional on the other, for example if an article is listed in latest, then it is not also repeated in the category boxes.

I want to know how and where to place items on a page, using panels, views, etc.

I've been having ongoing issues with text showing up like don/'t and /"this is a quote/" in the nodes of my 7alpha installation.

I thought that I'd figured it out, in my first install I'd used an htaccess file from a 6.x install. When I replaced the file, the problem went away.

I just upgraded to Alpha2...and IT'S BACK! I'm almost sure that it's in the htaccess file, but don't know what to look for? It is evidently some combination of the php5.x that my host is running, and what 7 is expecting to see.
