Installing Drupal

Are drupal modules forwards compatible? That is, will a module meant for drupal 4.7 work on version 7?

I am new to Drupal.

I want to use it really bad.

I want to install it on my local computer.

- The installation instructions on Drupal and any website are way too vague. They are pretty much like "Get a web server, install drupal and done", like if it were so easy.

1. Tried on WAMP, latest release. Downloaded latest drupal. Went to install.php. First problem, the usual error I have found on a lot of postings "Can't connect to SQL"

2. Ok so Drupal instructions don't say anything about that I have to create my own database.

3. So I go an read about. Phpmyadmin create my database. And spend 2 days, with the same problem. After about to commit suicide (not really) I ran into this posting that says. "To install locally, create a database and select host is only 'local'"

4. So there we go again. Create DB, user. Go to install.php. Yepeee. SQL error gone. But now I get an "execution time exceeded"

5. I spend another 2 days, reading. To find I need to change php.ini and some other file so the execute time is zero. Score!!!

6. I go and do install.php. Localhost waiting...(10 minutes)...Next screen "Install"....(10 minutes)...."Language"....(10 minutes)...My god!!! This is slower to install than Windows 98!

7. Next screen "Enter database info"...I do this. Submit...(20 minutes)...Then:

I install the Drupal 7.0 but it was running there has some problem to following steps. I don't know why there is no file folder as its mention, is it need to create a new file name folder there, and it also mentioned I can't re-write the name of settings.php, if someone can let me know how to solve it, i am totally appreciate. trying to install D7 RC4 on xampp on linux (from apachefriends). I'm using FF (if that is relevant). Installer gives me the error:

Failed to connect to your database server. The server reports the following message: SQLSTATE[28000] [1045] Access denied for user 'exampleusername'@'localhost' (using password: YES).

I have a site running CiviCRM based on Drupal, and have had no trouble at all. Now I want to add a site, to start creating a corporate website. I followed the instructions in the "Drupal Cookbook" and made all the changes accordingly to create Multiple Sites with VirtualHost. Now I cannot access anything but the login page (I can log on, but my dashboard of CiviCRM won't open and whenever I try to access any other page I get "page not found"). When I try to acces my new site (//localhost/"Databasename") I also get a "page not found" message.

I created a site on my localhost and then moved it to web. When I view the site on line none of my contributed modules are installed on the on-line drupal site, the directory is correct, and I can see the folders in the right place using a file manager. all my content is there but no contributed modules (CCK, mollom, poormanscron, adsense,....)
