Once you disable SMTP via a checkbox in the administration interface, the mail system is never going back, which results in nasty errors and other consequences when sending/testing mails without SMTP later.

I've made a quick patch based on the one in the related issue. At least it fixes the problem for me, but I'm sure it could be better done )
