I'm thinking about using drupal to build a community website, but I'm unsure about the scalability.
what's the maximum number of users drupal can handle?
is it realistic to build a community site with multple thousand users?

thanks for you experience

Cheers,
Jochen

what kind of hardware do you have at your disposal? How many users do you expect online at the same time, etc?

This site has > 87,000 users, and from what I understand, runs off 2 dedicated front-end linux webservers, and a dedicated back-end Sun database server. Remember, however, that this hardware supports also groups.drupal.org, lists.drupal.org, api.durpal.org, cvs.drupal.org, etc. So, just the Drupal.org part with this number of users might not be so hardware-intensive.

... I was somehow not aware of the size of the community and the size of some of the existing drupal websites.
I perceived it more as a CMS for intranets, weblogs and smaller communities, but obviously it's well capable of running larger scale websites.

Thanks for the heads up
