is there a way or a module for users t be able to set up vanity url's for themselves on the profile bit?

i know of the module path but admin have to set that if im right?

I'm also interested in this. I understand that pathauto is used for nodes etc. but how can it be enabled for users?

I asked a similar question and the response was it's doable but will need a custom module.
