Im looking for a theme that allows a bit more "blocks" instead of the usual 1-3 column approach. Yes, there are several very nice themes that arrange things nicely with using columns, but I think most will recognize what Im describing as "blocks" and im not talking about Drupal blocks per say. The type of themes that I see which have this type of layout are typically wordpress blogs or something similar.

Any suggestions ?

What you are after are called regions in Drupal. You can start with a theme with the needed regions or add your own. You may also want to look at the panels module which provides similar functionality that applies to page and has UI for assign content.

I'd recommend Genesis. It's very flexible on layout, easy to subtheme, and has great documentation.

Genesis - wow, that's pretty close and might just fit what Im looking for! Im going to give it a shot, strange Ive never seen it while perusing the list of themes here on the main Drupal site however. Thanks for sharing.

You can also add regions to any theme by modifying the .info file. I don't know whether you would need to do this, given the GPanels feature in Genesis, but you could do it in other themes, too.
