On October 1, Dries, head developer of the Drupal project, announced a code freeze in preparation of the Drupal 4.3.0 release. The Drupal community aims to release Drupal 4.3.0 on November 1, three months after the 4.2.0 release. The upcoming release will contain a lot of new features visible to the user and even more under the hood.

Some goodies are:

  • new integrated menu system
  • URL aliasing
  • integrated admin menu
  • sortable tables
  • database prefix
  • multiple and anonymous sessions
  • improved performance and usability

In order to help the release to be as bug free as possible, we welcome people who want to test the code in CVS. A release candidate will be made available shortly. The daily CVS snapshot can be found on the download page.

I just installed the CVS last night in the process of getting my hosting reseller account going, along with the new project module and the usual collection of add-ons I use with my own site.

A few (notably online and style) aren't working with the CVS, but I have no complaints about this; the menu integration is beautiful and I'm glad to see that the first user/admin account no longer requires email registration.

4.3 looks great, and I'd recommend grabbing a copy of the CMS to anyone curious; I've been beating on it for the last few hours and haven't had any problems at all (admittedly, your milage may vary depending on installation, but since I usually try to install one of everything, it seems like I should have broken something by now).

One caveat; the user login and navagation blocks are not enabled by default, so you should turn them on if you're doing a clean installation, lest you lock yourself out like I did. ;)

When I saw that 4.3 would be comming out around November, and the code is not frozen I grabbed a CVS version od Drupal. It is awsome.

Like Max I love the new user menu. But the part I love the adding of CSS classes to a lot of the Drupal tables, and elements. In 4.2 I was spending loads of time overriding functions trying to get everything styled just right. Now I can do nearly everything from a CSS file.

Great work!

Yeah the menus are nice. Upgrade simple. Drupal is a gem.

I only ask that there be a easy upgrade for novice 4.2 users such as myself...!

Hello!

We still use Version 4.0 here and are very content with it. In case we would want to update to 4.3, is this option possible? Are there known issues?

Thanks

Steff

There's little reason not to update and not enjoy all the new features. Though you will have to update custom modules/themes. If you back-up before updating, little can go wrong.

Updating can be done through update.php. After backing up your database, copy over the new Drupal, use the supplied update.php as admin user and follow the instructions.

If you cannot log-in, you'll have to edit update.php to by-pass the access check. Don't forget to put it back later.

You can update your database "without" problems, but if you have a custom theme or modules, it is posible that you need to make changes on them

If you have a custom theme or module to update, try to compare wiht a similar item to see what changes need to be made.

That´s what i have done before ;D

I imagine that, at some time or another, drupal´s theme and module systems will become stable enought so that they will not need modifications between versions. I hope :D

Do you mean copy over the new Drupal into the same directory as the old and overwrite the old Drupal? Also will the update.php file work with an upgrade on a Postgres database? I'm sure it will but will I need to edit it so it will use the correct database file?

The new menu system is fantastic (can't wait for someone to hack it with DHTML) and a great improvement for administrators. Sadly I have a site that needs to go live next week, so I'm having to go forward with 4.2. The good news is i know I'll have a treat for my users come november!
