Are you using MySQL or PostgreSQL? Apache server? Localhost or remote server? Is the database on the same server as the webserver? Which browser do u use for viewing the page? Did you create the sites\default\settings.php and does it have write access?

Smells like no cookie or session support to me. It's possible (but rare) to set up PHP with no sessions - enable and check the PHP error log.
See if you can use a util (like firebug etc) to see if cookies are being accepted.

thanks, I send you a pm, you can see the problem online. ( if you like )

Yeah I was able to replicate this broken behaviour by disabling cookies on my own browser when setting up a test site. The process freezes at the same point.
I'd still guess your php is not properly supporting sessions - it didn't send me a SESSID

Check your phpinfo for session support.
I'll list mine - but I don't know which bits may be different for you.
See the FAQ for enabling phpinfo - you can do that before Drupal is running.

session
Session Support enabled
Registered save handlers files user sqlite
Registered serializer handlers php php_binary wddx

Directive	Local Value	Master Value
session.auto_start	Off	Off
session.bug_compat_42	Off	Off
session.bug_compat_warn	On	On
session.cache_expire	180	180
session.cache_limiter	nocache	nocache
session.cookie_domain	no value	no value
session.cookie_httponly	Off	Off
session.cookie_lifetime	0	0
session.cookie_path	/	/
session.cookie_secure	Off	Off
session.entropy_file	no value	no value
session.entropy_length	0	0
session.gc_divisor	1000	1000
session.gc_maxlifetime	1440	1440
session.gc_probability	1	1
session.hash_bits_per_character	5	5
session.hash_function	0	0
session.name	PHPSESSID	PHPSESSID
session.referer_check	no value	no value
session.save_handler	files	files
session.save_path	no value	no value
session.serialize_handler	php	php
session.use_cookies	On	On
session.use_only_cookies	Off	Off
session.use_trans_sid	0	0

If it looks like that's the problem, you'll probably have to ask your host about it - unless you have control of your own php.ini file.

My phpinfo is looking exactly the same as yours. And I still experience the same problem. The page refreshes, all info is gone and nothing more happens. The fields are empty and I have to redo it, with the same result.

We have now solved the problem for 5.10. We added the 'Internet user account' to have modify permissions on all folders for the site. This solved the problem for 5.10 but for 6.4 we still experience the same problems.

session.save_path (usually /tmp) wasn't writable?
That would have been leaving messages in the php error log.

I though it would leave marks in the error log. But it didn't. So I have no idea of what is causing all this. And the problems with 6.4 is still unsloved. I am working on that and will come back if I find anything. But 5.10 is working anyway as I said.

Back to work again...

I have the same problem. I have the same problems with both 5.10 and 6.3. When filling out the forms with database, username and password all the page does is refreshing and nothing happens.

Cookies and sessions is enabled. I get no error report either...

I am installing 6.4 on dreamhost. I have done this install on other servers without a problem, but for some reason I cannot get past the db config page either.

I have made sure that the settings.php file is created, I have also triple checked that all my information is valid. I have even chmodded the entire web directory to 777 but still no success. I have other (older) drupal installs on the server and they all work correctly, so the server should be handling sessions/cookies correctly. I have noticed that there are a few other posts in the forums about this yet there doesn't seem to be a good description of all the reasons this could be happening. Maybe some more detailed error checking should be done at this stage of the install.

black2night’s picture

i have tried every thing to install drupal but i can't get it to install, its driving me crazy.

I have the same problem trying to install version 6.5.
I'm new at setting up content management systems, but I have been following the video by addison to the letter.

grey_’s picture

Thought I was the only one. But it's the same problem here to.

peter törnstrand’s picture

I solved this issue with the 6.5 version by not changing the name of default.settings.php but to copy it and rename it to settings.php ... you should have both the files.

This WORKED. Means it's a Drupal bug. Please someone report it, I don't have the time right now :)

dman’s picture

If the problem was that someone renamed a core file instead of copying it...
Not a bug, just a failure to read the instructions

2. CREATE THE CONFIGURATION FILE AND GRANT WRITE PERMISSIONS

Drupal comes with a default.settings.php file in the sites/default
directory. The installer uses this file as a template to create your
settings file using the details you provide through the install process.
To avoid problems when upgrading, Drupal is not packaged with an actual
settings file. You must create a file named settings.php. You may do so
by making a copy of default.settings.php (or create an empty file with
this name in the same directory). For example, (from the installation
directory) make a copy of the default.settings.php file with the command:

     cp sites/default/default.settings.php sites/default/settings.php

If so many users do this misstake, the instructions should point this out.
