Greetings,

Last I developed with Drupal was on the v8.x series, latest, ending.

Now Drupal v11.4.x series is current / stable.

I understand to do the installation deployment of the Drupal code and modules, it is required to use Composer.

I used Drush in the past to run the Drupal cron. Actually I preferred to run Drupal cron via Drush as it had verbose output invoked that way... which I would scrape and retain in daily log files. Running Drupal cron via wget gave no verbose output of what was happening.

So are both Composer and Drush recommended to have set up to properly / fully support Drupal v11.4.x?

TIA!

I am thankful,

Michael

Yes, they work well together, and cover different things.

Composer manages the Drupal filesystem. It exists outside Drupal, and plays no part of the real-time Drupal processing. Composer manages the files that make up Drupal.

Drush does things to Drupal. It has nearly no integration with the Drupal file system (though it can be used to create template files, but these will exist outside Composer). Drush is used to perform Drupal actions, on a Drupal instance.

Finally, composer used to add Drush to the file system, as the library drush/drush.

Greetings jaypan,

Thank you so much for your succinct reply! I was half fearing that my post about using both Composer and Drush would not turn out to be understandable. I am relieved to see that at least for you the line of questioning made sense!

As for migration assistance... I appreciate the eagerness to further assist. I left our client sites at D8, while our own site is back on D6 since it makes use of the core Blog module which Drupal Core deprecated. I think first to upgrade each client site to the latest D11.4.x, then work on tackling our D6 to D11.4.x migration... anticipating that Blog module will prove challenging to successfully migrate the data.

Also, our site makes use of Taxonomy for site navigation. Many years ago when I was just learning Drupal on 5.x, I came up with an elaborate site navigation system for a huge website we took from a mix of legacy technologies, migrated over to Drupal + CiviCRM + a custom Drupal module to provide SSO to UBB.Threads forum. My silver bullet for migrating the site content which were Drupal pages with Premium module providing teaser previews to anonymous visitors was to:

1) Tag with all appropriate Taxonomy tag keywords the page makes reference to

2) Built Taxonomy queries with AND'ing of the various tag keywords

3) Embed those Taxonomy query URL's into content rich URL Aliases for search engine munchies.

4) Put those resulting URL Aliases onto Drupal menu entries.

The result was content creators could add content, tag the new page with all of the context appropriate Taxonomy tags the new page references, and my above magic would take care of listing that new page on all of the context appropriate places of the Drupal navigation system. The system was a huge success. I think I tried and deleted attempts to migrate the site to Drupal at least twice before arriving at the brilliant creative solution above.... and that is what the site operated successfully on for many years.

We attempted to harvest / migrate the node content from D6 up to D8 already years ago. The Taxonomy tag values did not migrate cleanly to D8. :-( That is where the effort ended. It was as if the Drupal content migrator module was not handling the Taxonomy ID's correctly... A page on D6 tagged one way would arrive on D8 tagged something completely different.

For me, Drupal 5.x and 6.x were the versions I knew best. I did not do much with Drupal 7.x. Migrated the other clients sites onto Drupal 8.x and that has been it for Drupal for several years.

Charge!!! Onto setting up the latest Drush on our server next! I got the latest Composer set up this morning.

I am thankful,

Ahh, sorry, I wasn't pitching to help you specifically with a migration, it's just my tagline, it's in the footer of all my comments. :) I am happy to help here on the forums with no further expectation than a thanks.

Good luck with your upgrade!
