With more Drupal sites upgrading to version 8 in 2018, lack of a stable module for effective spam filtering is a major issue. Many of the reliable anti-spam modules for Drupal 7 such as Mollom, Anti-spam and others are either no longer supported or have no D8 port. The CAPTCHA module with its dependent re-CAPTCHA and the stand-alone Honeypot module are the three that seem to be popular with Drupal 8, but a quick look at the issue queue for CAPTCHA 8.x-1.0-beta1 reveals that the module in its current state is unusable. Honeypot is only moderately effective and needs modules like CAPTCHA and re-CAPTCHA for backup support for most sites with moderate activity. Many developers are outsourcing spam filtering to third-party applications with Drupal 8 sites, but this may not be appropriate for smaller sites or sites with security concerns. Can anyone help with getting CAPTCHA to a stable release?

couturier commentedI've re-written the issue summary and will be linking other issues to this one to try to see if we can get a new maintainer on board. I'm already committed to helping out with the Backup and Migrate module and with other life obligations just literally have no extra time to devote to a new port, but this module is really important. Almost 30,000 sites are using the D8 version currently, and many may not release how error-prone the current version is.
Original title and description for this issue: CAPTCHA is unusable with current beta and DEV state

couturier commentedNote in this comment that CAPTCHA is disabled for admin. This may be why some people in the issues queue aren't seeing it show up. Also, I'm seeing only about 42 open issues for CAPTCHA 8.x, which isn't insurmountable. Seems like we should be able to get this module back up to speed if we can find a new co-maintainer. With almost 30,000 sites reporting use of the 8.x module surely we can find someone to help.

elachlan commentedI would love more maintainers.
What would be great is if people could write additional tests, such as the new javascript functional tests. This would pick up issues similar to the above and generally make it easier for people to contribute.
Other than that, anyone can help wrangle issues in the issue queue or contribute.

couturier commentedSomeone replied to another related post and suggested Anti-spam by Clean Talk as an alternative. It isn't a free service, but the pricing is very reasonable, and the module is actively maintained for Drupal 8. It filters spam without requiring users to enter a CAPTCHA.

wundo commentedI'm going to be working on getting CAPTCHA on shape for a stable release this month, but I agree more help is welcome, if anyone can help with tests and reviews that is great.
