I am wondering since I am fairly new to drupal but not to coding if I would be better of diving into D8 or I should stick with D7.
Will a lot of what I do in D7 be invalidated by D8 ?
I'm just trying to think long term and if I should just jump in the deep end with D8 or learn and then adapt for D8.

depends on what you are doing. A new production site launch? D7 new module development for a site to be launched on D8 = D8

I would stick with 7 for now. It's true that 8 will be very different, but the basic concepts will be the same. If you know when, where and why to use a certain hook in 7, I think you will be ahead of the game when you move to 8. You'll pick it up quicker.

Let's Drupal
I would say stick with D7
I would recommend to go with D7, as D8 is in beta currently and for a newbie in drupal it is better to go with a stable thing which is D7 as for this you have a large community who could help you up.
Drupal 8 offers improved
Drupal 8 offers improved content editing, authoring experience, mobile-friendly and responsive nature, and is better for multilingual sites, etc. It seems that D8 additions more than 200 new features, so I'd choose to update to version 8.
I'm also on D7. From past
I'm also on D7. From past experience with other systems I have learned that waiting is a good choice. So I think I'll wait a little while longer.
I will go with D8.
I will go with D8.
Newer is better. :)
