Panopoly uses a bunch of contrib modules that break if you use jQuery 1.8. This issue is a main tracker to allow compatibility for those contributed modules.

Additionally, many implementations require js libraries in the theming layer that require jQuery 1.9+. Bootstrap is an excellent case in point.

The IPE really blows up at the moment. If you find another module that needs jQuery 1.8+ compatibility, create an issue and link to it here.

On a related note - once we #2235081: Update jquery_update to version 2.5, it will be possible to select even higher versions of jQuery, for example, jQuery 1.9 which is needed for the latest Bootstrap or jQuery 1.11, the latest version.

We spoke about possible backwards compatibility. In Kalatheme we explored some JS shims here: https://github.com/drupalprojects/kalatheme/pull/150 – not sure if useful, but in the spirit of the meta issue linking here.

Ctools could pose a problem ultimately.
Kalatheme / Radix could do this upstream in the theme layer.

We managed to override cTools modals with Boostrap modals here:

(note kalatheme 4.x is generally unstable and not production ready).

All the current child issues are fixed after #2235081: Update jquery_update to version 2.5! So, we need to re-test Panopoly with jQuery 1.8+ (probably best to start with the highest version) and see what else breaks!
