A fresh install of Commerce Kickstart says:

"There is a security update available for your version of Drupal. To ensure the security of your server, you should update immediately! See the available updates page for more information and to install your missing updates."

When trying to update Drupal Core manually from 7.28 to 7.29 - not replacing the sites folder - it breaks the site. I imagine the folder structure is different in Kickstart?

Following https://drupalcommerce.org/blog/9072/updating-commerce-kickstart-2 and using the drush commands listed does not upgrade to the latest Core version.

What's the best way to upgrade?

Distros frequently include core patches, so it's best not to upgrade them separately. For commerce_kickstart see:

After using the drush upgrade command, it is still showing that I should upgrade core.

This is becoming even more of an issue now that the latest kickstart 2 release (7.x-2.15) contains core version 7.28 while the latest core release is 7.30.

When will there be a new kickstart release?

Many sites will not be affected by the security issues fixed in 7.29. Nevertheless, I am pretty much allergic to using distros. They enabled a site-builder to deliver a product that much faster, at the cost of loading longer-term update problems onto the unsuspecting client. Maybe that is unfair...

Yeah, I pretty much avoid them as well. Usually I just install them to reverse engineer what they do or see which modules they rely on. But I'm not too comfortable installing a site where I don't understand the internals myself. The possible exception being open atrium which I've been using to dev a site recently and may just use it for production.

No only is that linked blog article inaccessible (for a BLOG!) but the documentation specifically do not suggest updating core w/o the distro. How after several years is this still a viable issue? Drupal 7.56 fixes a security issue, but the commerce kickstart 2.48 (while listing as fixing this issue) doe not address the core update in its update. Back to manually updating. So why is this a distro again? #ventingover
