Hey all. i am new to drupal....I used joomla for 1,5 years... but 2 weeks ago installed drupal 6.0 rc2...and was amazed by flexibility and ability to make many customizations.

The question is if I install the RC2 to a production site...and when RC3 will be shipped or later 6.0 Final - won't it be a problem of online upgrade of the site from RC2 to Stable version ?

And when approximately the stable release will be shipped?

Thanks a lot for your responses.

use RC2 on a production site. 6.x-rc2 is pretty stable but it is better to wait a little bit and use the official point release. plus there really are no modules ready to use for 6.0 yet. only devel is official and only a few other modules are dev versions for testing only and not production. many important modules have not even released a dev version for testing yet.

it is not a problem to upgrade to the newer release of drupal. just make sure to run update after updating to the new version.

they do not put dates on releases.
the official 6.0 version will be released when all issues are fixed. but should be soon.

good luck and welcome to the drupal community.

Some misleading information is being posted here.

6.0RC2 is a release candidate, not an alpha or beta test. It is expected and desired that end users install it and report any anomalies.

Drupal core handles version upgrades very well. When database changes are required, the update code handles that for you. I have never encountered trouble with core in this area.

Some contributed modules (especially buddylist) have presented minor problems during major version upgrades.

Major upgrades (4.x to 5, 5,x to 6) do may require extensive work on custom templates if you have created those.

When 6.0 is released, you will not have difficulty upgrading. API and data structures are frozen at this point.

That said, you have to make an informed judgment about the condition of the software. At this hour there are six critical issues that you should review and a total of 76 pending bug reports.

There is not a scheduled ship date; Drupal releases when the software is ready and not before.

I would not hesitate to build a personal site on 6.0RC2. My primary hesitation with a commercial site would have to do with (third-party) contributed modules not being ready.
