Picali.com makes use of taxonomy and a whole lots of ingenuity to get user image galleries in Drupal without using Gallery or any other third party software. It has been optimized to only produce 30 to 70 queries depending on the page shown. I will be writing up the tech specs later. But right now you can feast on the beta product.

I took a template that the rest of Virginia Tech is using for other websites and adapted it to Drupal. See http://www.dev.biotech.vt.edu. Comments are welcome, I am going to launch the site soon and and looking for little things to tweak and add.

I put my OTO local body on Drupal and it runs great. Even our none too computer saavy secretary has no problem updating the calendar:
lvx-oto.org.
