Best way to update older drupal installation

I have an older drupal installation and I am wondering about the best way to update it to the lates stable version... Is there an FAQ? I have spent some time searching the site but am still at a loss on how to do it.

removing/moving prefixed tables in mysql

I previously created a database with prefixed table names to share certain tables across multiple websites. Now I don't want to share the tables and want to consolidate the database to a "normal" install. I thought I could rename the table names, but this didn't work.

5.1 hiccup with Quotes module

Hello folks,
I wanted to post this here - just in case it happens to someone else. I'm not sure if this is a bug in the quotes module, a unforeseen upgrade snag, or just bad luck. After upgrading to Drupal 5.1 and then upgrading the quotes module a few days later, I noticed that only the body of the quotes were showing up in my quote block. Strangely, quotes were not showing up as a type of content to add, and if you tried to edit an existing one, the page did not contain the node content - just the extraneous information - publishing options, notes, etc ..

404

Since I'm upgrading to 5.1 from 4.7, I decided to switch servers. Dreamhost turned into Craphost, so I picked up an account at Textdrive.

Before I activate the switch I'm setting up a test site (with a copy of my current site) on a domain I'm not using. Once it's perfected, I'll point the DNS at the new server and it should be a seamless switch.

I ran the upgrade and it all seemed to be working properly. The site is up, though it needs some tweaking. Problem is, I get a 404 error when I click on anything. None of my pages work. I try to login and I get a 404 error.

4.6.8 to 5.1 ??

from 4.6.8 to 5.1, what should i have to do?
is any database table added?
actually i just want to move the article, event, and users, is that enough if i just export and then import the table 'cache', 'event', and 'users' ???

5.1 to 4.7.x Should i go ?

I have installed 5.1 version of Drupal.

But most of the modules that i like are available only for 4.7.x

Is there anyway i can convert to 4.7.x from my 5.1 ?

Or it it possible to install new 4.7.x and use this same databse so that the posts are retained ?

Please Help.

Thanks,
