Before you start

Is it possible (with modules or default installation) to let users select a usergroup they want to be in when they register?
And depending on the usergroup a user has, give them access to different parts of the website (and don't show different navigation).

i'm considering switching to drupal.

currently, i'm running a "community" which consists of several bridged components...

i'm using modx as a cms, smf as my forums, coppermine bridged to smf for the pictures, mediawiki bridged to smf....

now, the main question is, will i be able to migrate my users from smf to drupal?

i think yes, and i'll try it out on my local computer this evening..

but.. what about the "bridged" coppermine?

My old site had a very heavy, ajax "shoutbox" style block that allowed users to post quick blurbs in realtime. It quickly became the site "chatbox" as people flooded it with conversation. All the shouts were stored for perusal by users at a later date.

In the new, Drupal, version of this site, we'd like to maintain some of that shoutbox functionality in an ever-present block. It would need to auto-refresh regardless of page-refresh and include a simple timestamp.

We are considering creating a social network between our organization and university researchers.

Question: Will each user be required to install or download anything onto their client machines? If so, it will preclude us being able to go this route.

Any other opinions about what we are trying to do? Our needs are to:
Broadcast information to a selected group.
Restrict visibility to just our group.
Share data.
Blog.
Social network functions like Facebook (individual spaces, establish friends)

There is possibility to make terms Related from different vocabularies? Like it is possible from the same Vocabulary by default (Taxonomy module)?

Let's say

vocabulary A: term A1, term A2;

Vocabulary B: term B3, term B4;

For example I want to make term A1 related to term B3
term A2 related to term B4

So if i am seeing node with term A2 I want to show block with node titles from B4 and so on...

There is any module to make it possible?
