I am the webmaster for the National Writing Project at Rutgers University, a professional development network of writing teachers in NJ. Our membership is based on having attended a four-week training seminar that runs on the Rutgers campus during the summer months. Our website, http//www.NWPRutgers.org is used primarily to inform teachers/administrators across NJ about our various professional development opportunities.
Internal communication occurs through Yahoo! Groups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nwp_rutgers/ This is a great way for us to create and organize plans for site activity. Posting messages is the most popular feature. I once tried running a phpBB off our NWP Rutgers website, but people want to receive messages through email. Not only do members post messages, but they upload photos, documents, maintain a calendar, and share useful links.
Here is my problem. I hate Yahoo! advertising and the rigmarole to get new teacher consultants registered with a Yahoo account. Secondly, members are creating/sharing new content on Yahoo, but I get stuck duplicating material back onto the NWP Rutgers account. Finally, posting messages is great for whole-group communication, but I'd like to have subgroups to parallel various subcommittees within NWP Rutgers. So, I'd like to bring the functionality of Yahoo! Groups over to the NWP Rutgers website.
