Language internationalization problem with url's

Dear all, although our website works well, we have trouble with changing urls already for years.
Drupal makes automatically url's like these:

Remove "edit" and "delete" links from Recent Content block.

I think I did something accidentally I was not aware of. Unexpectedly, my Recent Content block which is in the left hand sidebar of a Pixtures Reloaded theme, started expanding to the right overflowing the sidebar and bleeding into the main content. It only happens when logged in and all the recent content is mine. I noticed that the edit and delete links are listed with each recent content listing. I don't think those were there before. Is there a way to turn them off in the Recent Content block? The only way to fix it was to reduce the font size which affects other stuff adversely.

Presence of custom PHP function causes error

I have a php include that provides some basic functionality that I find myself repeating often - things like string manipulations and formatting. I am including this on my page but it causes the page to crash. I know the path is correct. If I don't define any functions in the file, everything runs through. If I have even a simple blank function, the back goes blank.

My include:

<?php
    $foo = 3;
?>

In my page.tpl.php:

pack of recommended modules? anyone?

Hi all, this is only my second post and i'm pretty new to drupal but i'm very excited to be using it after briefly flirting with MODx, Joomla and wordpress. I really like what i'm seeing but unfortunately i don't think i'm getting off to a great start. I have installed several modules but I really am at the early stage of trial and error. I have no idea which modules to install and I also want to choose a theme and edit it, but theme editor doesn't seem to want to work for me as there seems to be conflicts with the version of drupal i'm running (7.2).
