Installing Drupal

hi new to drupal and having a hard time getting past d/base config. I know the limits of yahoo in general and .htaccess files - will move in jan but need to get some idea of system before then.

Have uploaded to created subdirectory "testsite" used ftp to upload. Created copy of default.settings.php placed it in the default directory. Changed permissions on both files to 777 - in desperation have also tried changing the directory permissions but sites goes back to 775 no matter what i do.

I have installed apache on a 1GB slice and then installed Drupal6. I expected to see the drupal home page when I type in the url. However I still get the apache "It works!" page which means that Drupal han't been able to tell apache to redirect the request.

im trying to fix my site map because its only shown 1 page. I tried everything (or almost as i expect)

so i installed the xml sitemap module, all modules are enabled, i have module element also installed, i tried xml sitemap unstable but gives me a fatal error....

dunno what else to do.

when I trying to install drupal 7 i have this error:

Content Encoding Error
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.

what is the problem?

I'm kind of new user at drupal and I created a drupal site using acquia. All was doing great but when i almost finished my site i tried to upload it to my ftp server and now I'm getting only the home page but when i try to navigate i get a "500 Internal Server Error".

I am about to start building a new site today but I need some advice on which version to use.

I think it would be the wisest to stick with 6.x version, but I am not sure.

I have built previous sites in 6.x and I think module support for 6 is much more expanded and I cannot use the same modules in 7.

Are there any advantages for me as a basic drupal user to use version 7 over 6?
