Installing Drupal

I just installed Drupal and have started rebuilding my website. I have built my first page and "published" it but am clueless as to how to get it to show up as my main web page.

I am looking to have a local, development version of Drupal that works from a USB flash drive and was curious if anyone could point me in a 'tried and true' direction.

My goal is to take my existing production Drupal 7 Mulit-site environment and have a development environment that runs from a USB flash drive. This way, I can plug in the flash drive, and work from any computer. I would merely need to update the site via drush and Git and be on my way.

I've setup a site comprising

:: Apache 2.4 + mod_proxy_fcgi;
:: PHP-FPM 5.4;
:: MySQL 5.4;
:: Drupal 7.34.

I managed to carry out the Drupal setup, albeit not with the "regular" display, but instead with a white page, text only, stripped of every graphical element except the Drupal log.

Afterwards when browsing the site the same there: white page, text only, no graphical elements, themes, etc.

It appears as if any colour, images, background, javascript etc. has simply been ripped away.

In /var/www/html I execute: drush dl drupal to download Drupal.

I then follow Drupal's install instructions:

Now can't even log in.
