Installing Drupal

Hi,

I have installed drupal on sourceforge.net. Everything seems work but it returns an error:

The directory files is not writable.

And so I have 'chmod 777 files' manually from shell, but error ever returns.

Have you any idea?
I had read various posts about it on this forum, but I have not found a "working solution".

What's Drupal requirements to PHP?
I've compiled PHP, but it works very strange.
Xtemplates are not supported. If I set on of them - for example BlueMarine - I get {blocks} and {head} instead of text.
I think in this case templates aren't parsed well. Which modules are required to parse them well?
At that time templates based on theme engine Chaneleon or Marvin works fine.

I try to import french language to my website and it doesn't seem to work

i add the language, but the import doesn't work, in my log server i receive this message
