I have set this up as two separate mailchimp components in the relevant webform - one hidden and defaulted to on, the other visible.
When these components are on the form individually, they work to subscribe and unsubscribe as appropriate. However, when both are on the same form, the selection state of the last component on the form, whichever that happens to be, is the state that is set for all of the mailchimp components.
It is almost as if it is working through each mailchimp component for some things, but not for others...

As you pointed out this does seem to fix the issue but it would be good to get the module maintainers opinion.
