Error when multiple subscribe fields are on the same entity?

We were getting "There was a problem with your newsletter signup." whenever a user signed up. We theorized that maybe it was because we had 2 lists on the user entity, so we removed one of them. Each list had its own merge fields, some of which were expecting the same data (2 lists asking for First Name, for instance). Removing the second list subscription field resolved this error for us.
