I believe there was an option previously to make user registration by invitation only, some sources (presumably regarding older versions of Drupal) saying it's under "admin>users>settings" (in Drupal 7, it doesn't seem to appear under "administration>people" nor under "administration>configuration>people>account settings," "people>invite" (linked to from the "configure" button on the module page), or "people>Request Invitation" (just occurred to me, does installing that additional extension automatically enforce registration by invitation only and remove the option? And if so, is it normal for the registration page to still be accessible by anyone without an invitation, as is the case I'm finding?* edit: actually it doesn't, it is still possible to register without an invite. And setting user registration permissions to "administrators only" blocks the registration page from invitees)
So I'm at a loss to figure out how to make registration "Invite Only," would appreciate clarification on this.

ToucanSam commented@neerajskydiver,
I've installed the sandbox project as well, and while it... works... ish, the issue is that this is listed as a feature of the invite plugin and does not work.
There is no additional registration mode enabled when you install the invite plugin. The sandbox project you listed DOES enable this feature... but it also requires installing an additional module (user referral) which shouldn't be required. Besides, it has additional features (referral links) which are forced and I don't want to use.
Also, with the sandbox project registration isn't actually limited. I can still register on my site without previously having obtained a registration code. :)

neerajskydiver commented@ToucanSam,
Even though this was listed as feature of invite module, Registration invite has been developed as new project altogether and has dependency of Invite as well as User referral modules. New module should be installed and configured separately.
I can look into this if you can add more detail about how have you configured and other modules you have used on your site.
