Is there a way to simplify the reuse of imagecache images? I can't figure this out for the life of me. I have a bunch of different content types that use the same size images and I use imagecache to create the images by uploading the images at the time of creating the node content. What I am looking for is to somehow browse the previously created (with imagecache) photos and attach that to the node as an option to re-uploading an image that I know is already on the server. Uploading/creating a new file would be be the secondary option.

That sounds like more of an editor or UI issue than one relating to the imagecache process itself.
A few UI gadgets (I like insert.module) let you choose both image+preset when inserting into content.
Anything more than that and you are looking for a full filebrowser UI, which is horrible to build, so making use of tools that fit with your chosen WYSIWYG or whatever would probably have the same result. Image browsers have been getting better (although they were traditionally atrocious) so look in that direction.

Insert.module is pretty good. Although I don't think even that has good support for image "re-use" when the images are not actually attached to the node in question.

My 2 Cents..
it looks like you might be interested in the filefield_sources module.
But I might be wrong, just hope it helps.

By the way, I completely agree about the filebrowser UI with you dman..
