:ddi: *Hello, welcome to this week’s Drupal Diversity & Inclusion meeting!*

This meeting:
• happens every Thursday at 12PM EST
• is chat only (no audio or video)
• happens in threads so keep an eye on those notifications
• there are about 5-10 minutes between topics for people who are multitasking to follow along.
• the agenda is public and anyone can add to it:
• :star: The transcript of this meeting will be exported and posted to the agenda issue. For anonymous comments, start with a :bust_in_silhouette: emoji. To take a comment or thread off the record, start with a :no_entry_sign: emoji.
• We are always working to make DDI channels a better place to work and communicate. If you haven’t already, please read our Guidelines:

Meetings are run by the leadership team - @sugaroverflow (she/her) @drnikki @alannaburke @sparklingrobots @mdrummond @gdd (he/him) @catch & @rubyji. This week it’s my turn to facilitate. This week’s agenda is at

:zero: If you’re joining us today, please introduce yourself, and tell us your favorite kind of smoothie or shake because I just got back from the dentist. :grimacing:

sugaroverflow (she/her) Fatima from London, :flag-ca: kind of glad I’m not leading the meeting today because I’m heads down and drowning in client work :tacocat:

Fave smoothie (currently) is something called lucky charms from my local place- a spinach, almond millk ,banana, greens, cacao nibs with protein powder smoothie that’s currently the best!

mdrummond Marc from MN although right now I’m in Atlanta, and my favorite smoothie I make with bananas, flax milk, ginger, tumeric, protein powder, and cinnamon.
rubyji Hi, I’m Ruby in Durham, NC where we keep pulling down confederate statues because no-one else will do it for us.

I make a smoothie with tofu, chocolate protein powder, chocolate chips, raw cacao, honey, cinnamon, and almond milk. Very popular with my kid as well.

damienmckenna Damien in Bangor, Maine, USA. My favorite shake is either banana or mango, with vanilla ice cream 'n other ingredients to make it milkshake-y.
rain Rain in North Hollywood. Totally embarrassed because you are all so healthy and I'm absolutely not. Favorite shake is a mocha milkshake (coffee and chocolate ice cream mixed together).
sugaroverflow (she/her) @rain coffee + ice cream in a milkshake sounds amazing :porg-heart-eyes:
eatings David in SF. I'm lactose intolerant, so no shakes for me.
rain @eatings I lived 100% dairy free for four years while nursing my kids due to dairy allergy issues.... and can tell you with absolute certainty that cashew milk ice cream is the best thing in the world
sugaroverflow (she/her) @eatings I sub almond or coconut milk in my shakes  depending on the base taste haha. (am i dairy splaining you? hahaha )
alexdmccabe Alex in Orlando, FL, US. Also lactose intolerant, but I wasn't as a kid, and I used to love those banana milkshakes at Checkers.
rain dairy splaining :slightly_smiling_face: love it.
Amelia Rose Khan Amelia Rose (First Name) from Toronto, I love banana and soy milk smoothies
alexdmccabe Oddly enough, my sister _used_ to be lactose intolerant, but she's had three kids, and each time it became less of an issue until it totally went away.

Now all I need to do is get pregnant three times... :unamused:

krismaye Kristen in MI :wave::skin-tone-2:
I usually make shakes with greek yogurt, protein powder, almond milk, and frozen fruit.
webchick Angie in Vancouver-ish, :canada: in/out a bit… Any kind of milkshake whatsoever. :slightly_smiling_face:
rain @alexdmccabe nice plan, unfortunately, every body and every pregnancy is so different, nothing is certain in any direction.... except that change will happen
cboyden Caroline in Berkeley CA USA. Mocha (coffee ice cream with chocolate syrup). I also like pureed soups. Chestnut soup is really rich and decadent!
sparklingrobots Tara, in Albuquerque, somewhat lurking/in and out of the meeting. This week I decided I'm done with smoothies forever. I want to like them but....instead I like cherry milkshakes.
sparklingrobots @cboyden chestnut soup sounds amazing!
alexdmccabe @rain That's fair.
alannaburke I like smoothies - my base is always bananas and almond milk, and then I like either chocolate protein powder and some raw cocoa, or peanut butter/peanut butter powder and a dash of cinnamon. You can add a ton of spinach to the chocolate one especially and never know
yesct I'm Cathy in Virginia USA. I like me ice blended with coffee chocolate and almond milk.
dmkelner Dori from Virginia. I absolutely love Sonic orange cream. Luckily, we don't have a single Sonic anywhere in 50 miles! I generally avoid all lactose and most shakes. Mine are all made from vanilla vegan protein, fruit and water.
unitoch Paul in Albuquerque, NM. I'm partial to an In n Out chocolate milkshake.
ekl1773 Well. I used to do fancier smoothies! Today it was 1 peach, ~ cup blueberries, no sugar vanilla yogurt and chia seeds.
ekl1773 (also I’m behind on messages today, give me a bit to catch up :stuck_out_tongue: )
nine.lives.black.cat Always anything with bananas. Though I've had something with cantaloupe once and that was awesome. But then also lassi.

Alas. I love fruit everythings.

rachel_norfolk Rachel, UK, not a fan of shakes at all...
ACFind Hi! I’m Alexis and I love oreo shakes :slightly_smiling_face:
mdrummond @rain Yeah, just because I have a smoothie I like to make does not mean that I end up making great decisions on all the food I eat. Although I’m certainly working on that! Anyhow, no need to feel guilty!
amyjune AmyJune from California. Our local coffee shop makes a spectacular Peanut Butter Mochachinno - yummy!
gaborhojtsy Gábor from Hungary. Banana smoothie all the way :slightly_smiling_face:
catch Nat from the UK (but currently Japan, hence eight hours late to the meeting). Back in usual timezone next week.

0️ *DD&I GovCon recap*
DrupalGovCon was last week and we had a big presence. Let’s debrief.

0️ *A)* Tabling and pronoun stickers

rubyji I thought the tabling went very well. I had a lot of fruitful conversations, especially with people who hadn’t thought much about this before.

A lot of people didn’t get the point of the pronoun stickers at first, but I was pretty aggressive about pushing and explaining them, and some folks definitely got it.

dmkelner I put the pronoun stickers on the main sticker table and they went like wildfire. I also put in a suggestion to the planning committee to collect gender identification information at registration and print it on the badges.
sugaroverflow (she/her) I saw some really cool pronoun stickers in one of @webchick’s open source summit tweets or grams - like paste-y stickers - was it a main registration table?
webchick Yes, a little table off to the side. There were little 1-inch buttons you could add like “Community Leader” or “Containers” or “Kubernetes” or whatever to explain things you were interested in (and help you find others who were interested in same), and the stickers were right next to there.
rubyji I’m not sure about printing it on the badges (people’s moods, bravery, presentation can change from day to day), but I think it would be great if the pronoun stickers could be offered right at the registration table where people get their badge.
alannaburke I’m glad the stickers went so well!
webchick They had He/Him, She/Her, They/Them, Xie/Xir (I think), “None (Just use my name)” and blank ones so you could fill in whatever.
Amelia Rose Khan I wasn't there but have questions. Were there visible women of colour or queer people of colour at the table?

Stickers are good but not for the environment. Are there alternatives been looked at?

webchick ALSO. @amanda is at this event too and she agreed they’re a great idea. So perhaps we can see those in DrupalCon in Seattle.
webchick They also had Red/Yellow/Green communication stickers. Green meant “I’m open to talking with strangers”, Yellow meant “Please only approach me if you know me”, and Red means “No thank you”
webchick Which also seems like a pretty cool system, esp. if you’re new to DrupalCon and enter a room full of people and are not sure who to sit next to.
alannaburke I think drupalcon had those last year!
sugaroverflow (she/her) I think I kind of like the three levels
sugaroverflow (she/her) but have to think on the _yellow_
rain @webchick the communication stickers sound interesting. Did that go well? Did people with red feel respected and not sidelined?
webchick @Amelia Rose Khan There was no one at this table; it was off to the side as kind of a “decorating” station that you went to after registering.
webchick @rain I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone with red yet, and if I did see them, I would not approach them to ask (per their request), so not sure. :slightly_smiling_face:
rubyji @Amelia Rose Khan There were people of color and queer people tabling for DDI at GovCon. Not sure we had any queer people of color. It’s always a challenge since those of us with more privilege find it easier to do advocacy like this.
dmkelner I found those at DrupalCon. I really appreciated the concept.
webchick Oh whoops, I was answering the wrong question, sorry about that. :slightly_smiling_face:
sugaroverflow (she/her) @Amelia Rose Khan  I identify as POC and tabled for DrupalCon Nashville pronoun stickers. Could you tell us more as to why you feel that stickers are not good for the environment?
rain @webchick that's a fair point, but I'm very curious... I started wearing a wedding ring to all Drupal events long before I was married as a method of creating a little safety bubble... but that didn't mean I didn't want professional conversations. Love the idea, but very interested in exploring the dynamics of it.
webchick @rain Ah, interesting.
rain Hm, but I think my notes/questions are a different topic.... my apologies.
Amelia Rose Khan Stickers are one time and thrown away right away
dmkelner I liked that I could put on a green sticker and hoped it would make people seek me out. I'm an introvert, so it's hard for me to reach out to strangers. This felt like it gave me permission because I actually love talking to people.
webchick Well, they go on the name badge so last for the duration of the conference. I also like them for indicating talkativeness because maybe you’re having a “green” day but maybe the afternoon something happens and you’re like “nope”… easy-peasy to adjust.
dmkelner Great point @webchick
Amelia Rose Khan @rubyji How do we prioritize people who have less privilege?
rubyji In tabling or volunteering, @Amelia Rose Khan?
Amelia Rose Khan Both
rubyji That’s a great question.
sugaroverflow (she/her) Well, stickers are used on the name tag for the whole event - so I think they are effective.
sugaroverflow (she/her) on prioritizing - that’s a great question and something we should definitely explore more :slightly_smiling_face:
Amelia Rose Khan Badgers are better for the environment in my experience but as others said, pronouns can change based on how you feel.
rubyji I think there are a lot of political and cultural barriers to participation for people with less privilege that are not very unique to the Drupal community, but which we should still address where we can (given that we are all volunteers too).
dmkelner @Amelia Rose Khan I'm not sure I understand your question. Can you elaborate?
rubyji I’m not going to be able to get deep into it right now, but this is absolutely something that we as a group need to be talking about.
alannaburke I think what’s tough on us as an organization is that we are limited by the folks who can attend the conference, and most folks are limited by whether or not their employer will send them. We have a much larger group at DrupalCon than at smaller, regional conferences and hence more diversity. But I think this issue is much more one of “how do we convince companies there is value (and how do we assure there _is_ value) in sending employees, especially underrepresented ones, to many conferences?”
Amelia Rose Khan @dmkelner which question, sorry.
Amelia Rose Khan Also this is about the messaging that is put out there too
dmkelner @Amelia Rose Khan How do we prioritize people who have less privilege? Can you elaborate?
rubyji Let’s move this to a separate thread.
rubyji :point_right::skin-tone-4:
nine.lives.black.cat @Amelia Rose Khan I am catching up, but I was there and at the table several times throughout the week! I also stopped and talked to lots of people about DDI. I do not identify as LGBTQ.
nine.lives.black.cat I wanted to make sure that I volunteered first and foremost because I feel like this group is actually committed to doing the work. I tend to not volunteer with groups that I don't have this certainty for because I don't want to end up as some group's "look we got one" visible POC mascot.
nine.lives.black.cat Two, I feel comfortable and safe with this group of folks, and know that they'll stick up and say something if I face a marginalization by a dominant group member and that they're okay with being challenged.
amanda hi - just jumping in for a second because I saw Angie mentioned me and only online for a short bit because I am indeed at the conference, but yes ++ to red/yellow/green stickers again for drupalcon and to adding pronoun stickers. happy to follow up on a break when im online for longer but wanted to say i see this :slightly_smiling_face:
Amelia Rose Khan @nine.lives.black.cat I understand!
gaborhojtsy earlier @ekl1773 said she would bring remaining pronoun stickers from GovCon to Drupal Europe, were there some left? should we figure out a reprint for Drupal Europe?
alannaburke i sent packaged up stickers for each event
gaborhojtsy yay, I just wanted to make sure we’ll have them :slightly_smiling_face: I believe we planned to source communication stickers locally, same way as DrupalCon Nashville and as explained above green/red/yellow dots

0️ *B)* Our presentation

rubyji There’s a video posted there already so check it out if you didn’t attend.
rubyji This talk will be adapted for presentations at Drupal Europe and BadCamp, so please give us suggestions for improvement!
rubyji So… ? :ear::skin-tone-4:
dmkelner It went well considering we ran out of time to practice. I recommend we follow continuous improvement practices and morph this into something spectacular. Also, we may want to rethink on the title to appeal to more people.
sparklingrobots I thought it went really well, and am excited to give the next version.
eatings still listening to it, but i like how broad the talk is
eatings i hope it helped to expand folks' perspectives
nine.lives.black.cat I think that it went well! I appreciated that you recognized that you were speaking on diversity and inclusion and that you still had a ways to go. I also really appreciated the gentleman from West Africa, Franck, who introduced us to the super intersectional problem his community has as someone coming from a set of African countries for whom French is their first language.
nine.lives.black.cat I'm hoping that as a DDI community we can help them become better integrated with the rest of the Drupalverse and connect them with other Francophones who might be able to give tips on how they overcome those challenges.
mdrummond I’m working on improving my French and getting more conversational, so maybe there’s something I could help with there?
nine.lives.black.cat @mdrummond Yes! I mentioned you to him. I'll connect y'all.
mdrummond @nine.lives.black.cat Cool, thanks!
mdrummond Or should I say… merci beaucoup.

0️ *C)* P.S: if you helped in any way, comment for credit:

rubyji This talk will be adapted for presentations at Drupal Europe and BadCamp, so please give us suggestions for improvement!

2️ *Initiatives!*
We’ve got some clarity on what initiatives we’d like to move forward for the next few months. Check them out and see where you’re interested to contribute! We’re also looking for more leaders for these.

2️ *A)* DDI Resource Library

rain If we are interested in being involved (but not leading yet...) how do we sign up / determine who the leadership is for the project to coordinate?
sugaroverflow (she/her) On the issue summary, I’ve added who the leadership liaison is (in this case Ruby)

You don’t have to sign up officially, there’s a couple of tasks in the related issues that you could pick up and do (and get credit for)

rubyji Maybe we should start a channel for working on this? The two main parts are content and interface.
sugaroverflow (she/her) Or do it in the main channel? Worried that initiatives shouldn’t get distributed again.
sugaroverflow (she/her) With camps, I totally understand the separation.
rain @sugaroverflow (she/her) awesome, thank you! I'll make sure to look the related issues over and see what I can pick up in the next few days
sugaroverflow (she/her) ping in the channel anytime for help, thank you for volunteering :raised_hands::skin-tone-3:
sparklingrobots I obviously leave the mechanics to @rubyji, but a lot of the resource library work has so far happened in <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team>. If y'all decide to take the work elsewhere, would you coordinate with @laughnan so things don't get doubled-up/confused in <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team>?
laughnan ^ yes please
rubyji Good point. I think if we make a new channel it would just be for managing the content, not the actual website. It really might not be needed at all. I’m just trying to think of a way to stay in touch with people who want to help.
sugaroverflow (she/her) stay in touch via the issue queue!
sugaroverflow (she/her) it’s good practice  - if the resources tasks need to be in the contrib team issue queue, I’m good with that :+1::skin-tone-3: wasn’t aware of this.
sugaroverflow (she/her) there are some currently in the ddi issue queue - maybe we move those over?
laughnan we could make a new Component (‘content changes’) for the DDI Contrib project?
laughnan

2️ *B)* Speakers

sugaroverflow (she/her) @mdrummond the issue will need some definition from you - but from what I know (for those reading) this is about training people to become speakers and provide them the tools & resources (and training) to help them succeed
mdrummond Yes, I will definitely get started on that next week when I am done with my travel.

2️ *C)* Standardizing our DDI presentation and determining policies for using it

sugaroverflow (she/her) so much awesome work has been done on this!
a great place to start would be feedback on our GovCon presentation:
ekl1773 Feedback would be particularly welcome while we’re updating it for Drupal Europe this week!

2️ *D)* The amazing <#C76TQUQ2D|ddi-contrib-team> !

sugaroverflow (she/her) If you’re interested in Contrib team, this saturday is the day to jump in for our Virtual Sprint day :raised_hands::skin-tone-3:
rubyji Yes, our first ever DDI Virtual Contrib Day is Saturday! Check it out:
webchick So I’ve been totally checked out of this (sorry ) beyond promoting a tweet. I can possibly be around for a chunk of Saturday, what’s the best way I can be helpful?
sugaroverflow (she/her) There’s a spreadsheet tracking mentors and contributors and what they can work on:
webchick I did make it there, but there are a lot of blanks. :slightly_smiling_face:
webchick And I noticed e.g. @sparklingrobots has a specific project, “Gender Field”.. is the idea that mentors should come with a project in mind or?
webchick I’m happy with “read this link dum dum” btw
alexdmccabe I don't think you need to, @webchick, it's just that @sparklingrobots (and I) will be focusing on that project
webchick Ok cool. Cos I think I could be around for general contribution questions, esp. if any around core, but I can’t immediately think of anything I know front-to-back enough to mentor someone on the implementation bits.
alexdmccabe I think that's perfect!
sugaroverflow (she/her) @webchick I might put myself down for triage or something  I’m not sure yet!
webchick One thing I’m aware of is Memcache module is currently in the process of getting up to snuff for D8. You can see the roadmap here:

So muchos testingos of this module would be super timely. However, I’ve never actually installed it myself, just kinda coordinating the work on it, so I wouldn’t be able to tell people how to do it.

OTOH, that’d be a good test of the README I guess.

webchick I could do a general ping in <#C1BMUQ9U6|contribute> about the sprint and see if we can get any people involved who have actual projects they’d like to mentor folks in and could be around on Saturday.

Do you have a particular profile you’re looking for wrt mentors tho?

alexdmccabe Not that I know of, paging @sparklingrobots and @ekl1773 for that one...
webchick Ok, well done anyway. :slightly_smiling_face:
ekl1773 This will be a time to work on some DDI initiatives like the website, migrating resources to the library, Gender Field, and also general onboarding as appropriate to each participant. So if they’re interested in code contributions, walk through local env set up, anyone can be introduced to the issue queue and where to look when they have a question, that sort of thing. It would be great to have more mentors from under-represented groups! But I think anyone is welcome to support the effort in the usual welcoming mentorish way. Thank you @webchick for offering your time and expertise :slightly_smiling_face:
There’s the planning issue here for any back end info we’d like to accumulate.
The issue tag for the event is `vcd2018` !
ekl1773
webchick Nice, thanks!
amyjune Thanks for putting this together. My team is having our weekly sprints tomorrow and we plan on tagging everything that is a novice task and needs review "vcd2018".
sparklingrobots Just dropping in belatedly to say hi, yay contrib team, and thank you to all the folks who are jumping in to help with VCD18!

2️ *E)* Crediting more kinds of contribution

2️ *F)* Security policy for DD&I and events

sugaroverflow (she/her) I’m thinking this one might turn into “DD&I and events” to be a little more broad since @sparklingrobots has an awesome event template and the security back channels have been successful in the past.
sparklingrobots I don't think I volunteered to be leader on this one, but that's because I missed it on the list of initiatives. I'm happy to be leader for now, and perhaps move to an advisory role if things get too hectic.
sugaroverflow (she/her) @sparklingrobots oops! I will rollback and take this one off you. I may have misread the reporter field as the assigned field :slightly_smiling_face:
sparklingrobots No, sorry! I don't mean it like that. I just mean I missed it. Leave me on there!
sparklingrobots I would have taken it if I'd realized.
sugaroverflow (she/her) ohhh haha, okay :+1::skin-tone-3:

rubyji Yes, our first ever DDI Virtual Contrib Day is Saturday! Check it out:

3️ Drupal Europe is coming up next month

3️ *A)* Who is attending? Can you volunteer to table and facilitate BOFs?

rubyji @sparklingrobots @ekl1773 Who else?
ekl1773 Should we reach out in the <#C70PEFHUK|drupal-europe> to see if folks are interested in volunteering some time?
rubyji Good idea.
ekl1773 … Not real sure a spreadsheet/calendar has been made for this purpose yet.
sugaroverflow (she/her) there’s a planning doc - hang on -
sugaroverflow (she/her) issue:

planning doc:

sparklingrobots I am inclined to just have coverage during breaks/as able for the table, given we have a very small number of people right now. I'd be game also to reach out to <#C70PEFHUK|drupal-europe> folks, though we may want to make sure we have some talking points prepared for them
sparklingrobots The folks I see in the comments on the thread are: @gaborhojtsy @dasjo and @agentrickard So that brings us up to maybe five booth people
gaborhojtsy I am not very likely to be able to help here. @gdd (he/him) is coming and said would help earlier :)
gaborhojtsy @sugaroverflow (she/her) had a cheat sheet of talking points printed for Nashville -- or did I imagine that? :)
rubyji I’m pretty sure @gdd (he/him) is NOT going to Drupal Europe.
sugaroverflow (she/her):skin-tone-3: I think he said he might be and fooled us all :disappointed:
gaborhojtsy Hm he did say that but he is not obligated to :) plans charge
gdd (he/him) I am not
sparklingrobots @sugaroverflow (she/her) do we have a cheat sheet of talking points? I know we prepped one for Baltimore
sugaroverflow (she/her) I believe the one for Baltimore was specifically for community tension responses like “we’re not the authority on x, y, z.” We can prep one for DD&I since we have new volunteers? Most of that info should be on our docs or postcards.
gaborhojtsy As with most other things Drupal Europe I think publicly stating this needs help is a good strategy :slightly_smiling_face: People don’t know. Sounds like a good opportunity to involve some new people :slightly_smiling_face:

3️ *B)* Folks are working on adapting the presentation we did at GovCon, you can help in <#CCDBGKHGQ|ddi-darmstadt-pres>

sparklingrobots I'm particularly interested to hear how this might be adapted to a European audience! If anyone has ideas on where to find relevant stats, for example, I'm all ears.
tim_nafziger @sparklingrobots I think this is an especially important question when it comes to race. In my experience introducing white European folks to conversations about race, there's usually some distancing around it being a US paradigm. So it can be useful to bridge things by talking about colonialism and how white supremacy plays out in different contexts. A lot of the current focus in Europe is countering anti-immigrant messaging, which would be a strong commonality.
sparklingrobots @tim_nafziger thank you so much, that is super helpful. I have been struggling a bit with *knowing* that I am coming from a US paradigm but not being clear on what the corresponding frame should be. This is huge, thank you.
gaborhojtsy Yeah anti-immigrant voices are clearly race-bound here especially in Hungary for example. “Saving our pristine white christian culture” and “We already have our gypsies to worry about” were two not very accidental sentences by the Hungarian PM. And he found commonalities with Polish, Italian, etc. leaders and now planning to set up a new pan-European party to represent this… So Europe is deeply into race issues now, just slightly different to the US.
sparklingrobots Thanks @gaborhojtsy! Very helpful to hear those details.
gaborhojtsy
gaborhojtsy On a positive note this is also hyper-local
gaborhojtsy from literally 3 days ago :slightly_smiling_face:

4️ @Amelia Rose Khan asks a good question, how can we prioritize people with less privilege in our work as DDI? This is one of those things that I think can’t be “solved” but that we should think about how to improve upon. I have more thoughts and links that I’ll add in the thread…

rubyji First, I’d like to point to our values as articulated here:
rubyji This kind of shows our goals and what I think we should be measured against.

Although if someone has feedback about the values themselves, we’de be interested to hear it.

rubyji Second, I would share this presentation we did last week in which we talk about diversity, privilege, intersectionality, inclusion, and discuss a bit of what we are doing.
rachel_norfolk I like this question - it's rather "meta". I mean, we ask others to solve how to prioritize people with less privilege so it seems reasonable that we figure out how to answer the same ourselves...
rachel_norfolk and it's not easy!
dmkelner I think the plan to take the presentation to more camps is key to getting more involvement. It provides visibility for the effort.
slsonnier @rubyji Can you clarify the question. What does this mean "how can we prioritize people with less privilege "
slsonnier What does prioritize in this context?
slsonnier As well as "people with less privilege"?
nine.lives.black.cat @slsonnier Making sure that we're not just propping up white women as the diversity poster folk is how I read that. Often people will put white (cis het) women on display to show that they're being diverse, which is frustrating as all get out because it means that we're not addressing the mountains of other issues. That's how I read it.
rubyji Well that was @Amelia Rose Khan’s wording. As for privilege I would refer you to our talk. Let me get a link.
nine.lives.black.cat During the DDI presentation, @rubyji and @dmkelner made sure to point out that yes, they were doing the presentation, but at the end of the day they were still white women, with loads of privilege over folks of other groups.
Amelia Rose Khan Prioritize as in actively seek out.
rubyji Peggy McIntosh is great at explaining white privilege.
.

But because we take an intersectional approach, we are concerned with all kinds of privilege.

Amelia Rose Khan Less privilege as in the intersectionality part of the values document and I was thinking visible minorities
slsonnier Thanks for adding that @nine.lives.black.cat. I can understand that clearly. @rubyji I'll look for the talk/link
nine.lives.black.cat I know that I'm weary of general recruitment and initially shied away from the DDI table at my first Drupalcon because of "mascot" hestitations.
nine.lives.black.cat I do think a good strategy for seeking out folks, that some of y'all might not have even been aware that you were doing, has been that folks have sought out building a relationship with me and understanding me as a person and what marginalizations I *do* face versus the ones they can outwardly assume. As a community, you also tend to try to understand what labor I can contribute within my other obligations and challenges I might be facing.
webchick I mean. To some extent this is the same general problem (and general applying advice) that white straight cis male conference organizers have in getting women speakers and such. We need to proactively seek out places where queer/people of colour/young|old etc. people congregate and let them know we’re actively seeking their involvement. And there probably needs to (eventually) be a financial component to allow them to e.g. even get to the conferences to attend/speak.
Amelia Rose Khan As I said in the other thread, we make sure that women of colour or queer people of colour are put forward. Yet, we have to understand that some don't identify as women.
nine.lives.black.cat There's putting folks forward, but then there's also seeking, finding, and supporting them as members of our community first and foremost, and I think that's the work that needs to be done and prioritized before asking labor of them.
webchick A very good point!
rubyji @slsonnier I meant these links:
nine.lives.black.cat One last thing, I do recall someone reaching out to me to find out if I wanted to speak on a certain topic, asking of other black Drupalers I knew might be available to speak, and then lastly asking where else they could connect with other folks that they could put in labor themselves of asking and recruiting.
webchick I guess... I’d pose the scenario of:

Let’s fast-forward to DrupalCon Seattle. We have a glorious D&I booth, which all of us look at and agree is awesome and satisfies our concerns. How is it set up? How is it staffed?

rubyji People often ask us about how to diversify their events and I always tell them to start at the top with the leadership. I think that’s something DDI can work on ourselves as well.
rachel_norfolk lead by example
nine.lives.black.cat In case people do not have access to profile pictures, I'll state that I am a visibly black/African-American woman of color who works as a frontend developer.
webchick @nine.lives.black.cat Do you have interest in / are you already in a leadership position in Drupal D&I?
webchick (Sorry for my ignorance; my “day job” of “keep Drupal running” is all-encompassing and so I only get to attend these meetings rarely.)
nine.lives.black.cat Not at this time. I have personal obligations, and I'm still learning you all as a community and your intent. I have faith that you're well-intended and talk-walkers, but right now I'm comfortable with consulting and giving feedback where possible.
webchick That is perfectly fair.
nine.lives.black.cat It's okay! I don't expect you to know my whole life. :slightly_smiling_face: I appreciate being asked.
webchick :slightly_smiling_face:
Amelia Rose Khan As @nine.lives.black.cat mentioned in the other thread, how do we not make people feel that they are not the only person of their community there. For example, a brown person of colour.
nine.lives.black.cat It is good to have BOFs and things of that sort (which we've had at many of the events I've been at!) where people can congregate together.
nine.lives.black.cat That being said, I *am* often the only person of my community that is in a place. It is not always easy, but the lesson for me has been to learn to be comfortable with that reality. It has also been helpful that people who identify as allies make it known that even if I am the only black person or person of color at an event, I do also *belong* in that space just as much as anyone else.
Amelia Rose Khan Is there someone who can take notes on this thread with action items?
nine.lives.black.cat This thread is being automatically logged. I forget what magic does it.
nine.lives.black.cat All of the DDI **meeting stuff is. Also, want to note: if you have questions or concerns as a POC that you would feel more comfortable having one-on-one, my DMs are *totally* open to you. I know how lonely being the only one can get.
rubyji Yes the thread is logged and it would be great if you want to add items to work on in our issue queue.
ekl1773 I’d been thinking about passive/active approaches and it does seem like what I’ve been involved with here is build it and they will come more than actively going into spaces and offering our support/initiatives, and such. Part of this might be that things in VCD and the career development and mentoring and all are in fledgling stages?
ps. I think there’s been a delay on exporting logs, so making note of action items on the issue for this meeting would be a+.
Amelia Rose Khan @rubyji is there a link?

mdrummond Just catching up on this, really good discussion. I’d be glad to take some notes on this over the weekend to make sure we get this discussion in particular captured, so we can make sure to find ways to keep this in mind and take action on it. Really important priorities here.
sparklingrobots First, I'm very grateful to be in this space and to be having this conversation! I'm glad @Amelia Rose Khan asked the question and agree it's something we can do better on.
sparklingrobots I'll speak briefly to my approach as a member of the leadership committee, which is entirely my own and not vetted by the rest of DDI: I focus on making space in contrib team for people of color, GLBTQIA+ folks, people with different abilities, women/nb/gq folks, religious minorities, etc. And I try to make sure that the opportunities I'm presenting via contrib team will have genuine impact on *their* career/life. e.g. I don't have any interest in asking marginalized folks to volunteer for the Drupal project *to help Drupal*, even though it would greatly improve Drupal. I work with contrib team specifically so marginalized people can build their resumes and/or profile in the community, which I believe will have a positive economic impact for those individuals (#sorrynotsorry, drupal). I'm not sure how much that message is getting to the folks I want to hear it, but it's what I hope for from contrib team.
sparklingrobots (maybe not so brief after all)
sparklingrobots I'd love to have better ways of centering, promoting, and helping those folks, and am thinking all the time of how to do better. One idea is to reach out to marginalized communities & see if they would be interested in building Drupal skills, and then partnering to figure out the best way to offer that. And I'm open to feedback on any of the above, either here or via DM. :ddi:

5️ *Announcements and celebrations and check-ins and we are human beings*

5️ *A)* Any announcements to share, upcoming events, etc.?

webchick I learned this week about the CHAOSS project: They aim to establish a “pattern library” of sorts for metrics that measure open source community health. D&I is one of their two main initiatives:
webchick I’m not sure if and if so to what extent we want to be involved, but thought it might be of interest to some here. :slightly_smiling_face:

sugaroverflow (she/her)
sugaroverflow (she/her) also want to highlight :skin-tone-3: :tada: @prestonso (he/him)’s recent spotlight on Behind the Scenes:

I want to recognize and appreciate being in a leadership position and talking about diversity & inclusion! :raised_hands::skin-tone-3:

nine.lives.black.cat Black Girls Code Dallas is having a Digital Making Class on September 15! It's not Drupalverse related, but if you know of anyone in the DFW area that has littles that might want to go or if you know anyone who might want to volunteer, please point them here:
prestonso (he/him) Thanks for the kind words @sugaroverflow (she/her) :ddi:

5️ *B)* Celebrations :banana-dance:

dmkelner I have two sessions submitted to NTEN and would love your votes. Voting ends tomorrow. The first is a session that was already accepted at php[world]. The second one was submitted by my co-presenter when we presented at AM&P:

rubyji I was about to ask you for links! Their voting website is not that easy to use.
rubyji I’m still mad they close voting (not to mention submissions) so early. We haven’t even had the election yet this year and we’re talking next Spring.
dmkelner You do have to create an account, and then either search or have the direct URL. It is very hard to read 800 submissions!
rubyji Oh I want to celebrate that our DDI session was accepted for BADcamp! Right now the plan is for me, @sparklingrobots, & @sugaroverflow (she/her) to present.
sparklingrobots Yay! Excited to go to my first BADCamp! I'm giving another session there, too, on command line basics for site builders, which has been on my to-do list FOREVER
manleywoman Will be my first BADCamp too. #newbies
rubyji Me three!
cboyden I also had my session accepted! In case it’s relevant to y’all’s interests:
sparklingrobots Woohoo! So many DDI folks at BadCamp! I'm so excited to go :porg-heart-eyes:

5️ *C)* How are we doing? :no_entry_sign: (off the record)

The official meeting hour is over, but I hope the conversations will continue. Thank you all for showing up and contributing to make this community a better space.
• To send feedback about DD&I, the leadership team, anything really (even anonymous high fives! )
• Next week’s agenda is at . Please add to it!
