Just wondering if there is any interest in creating a product designer module that can be used to customize products during checkout using a UI? It could be used to create custom mugs, shirts, business cards and all sorts of things.
I have seen this feature requested for DC a few times so I gather there is some interest out there. It is a feature that is available to most of the main ecommerce platforms.
My thinking is to integrate the open source http://fabricjs.com library. This could be used as a JSON/text field widget on a line item entity. The final customer design could then be stored as JSON data (naively supported by fabricjs) in the field. Alternatively/additionally it could be exported as an image or svg.
I did a quick fiddle mock-up here for a basic demo: http://jsfiddle.net/cdn256L6/1/
Whilst I don't think it would be extremely difficult to create such a module, I lack the expertise to do so myself. I would however, be happy to coordinate a chip-in if there is enough interest to get this created. It would be fantastic if there was interest in supporting from Commerce Guys also.
A few of the previous requests:

rszrama commentedSorry I didn't reply to your e-mail re: this sooner, but while the idea has a lot of merit (we've had such projects ourselves in years past), it's not something the core team will be prioritizing any time soon without someone paying us to do it. We just have too much on our plates already. However, this will make a mighty fine contributed module once someone either has the spare time or a project to fund it.

digitalfrontiersmediaWe recently built a site that utilizes Drupal Commerce and integrates SVG Editor for a true web-to-print workflow according to a design and workflow specified by our partner on the project. There are some areas of it that could use a little cleaning up, including the workflow choice, but the client has decided to move to Fancy Product Designer on a WordPress platform and relinquish their rights over the work done on the Drupal platform.
Our partner has the ultimate say on what happens with the code now, but there is talk of us continuing development on it and releasing it in one form or another. If you're interested in seeing the implementation, send me a private message/email and I'll provide URL & details. Depending on what the partner wants to do, we may re-open this thread and provide info publicly later.
