I setup a multigroup with a field that had a default value. When clicking 'Add another item', the default value doesn't appear (i.e. it only appears for the first set of fields in the multigroup). I figure this is a bug since that would be the expected behaviour...

Hmm, possibly... However that issue says if you disable javascript the default values are populated fine, while for me if I disable javascript the newly-added fields still don't have a default value set.

I've hit exactly this problem for a date field that should show current date as default value.
All fields remaining empty.

This is exactly the way that CCK handles all multiple value fields. The default only appears on the first one, otherwise every value would get saved. This is by design, not a bug.

I understand that this what the cck maintainers want it to do, but is there a workaround/hack/anything that would get it to respect the default values?

You would have to play around with Form API, maybe using #after_build. Can't tell you without trying to do it and I don't have time to do that.
