I've done a search here to find out whether or not it is possible to implement a "remember me" option at login. I did find this thread http://drupal.org/node/20002 but there seems to be no conclusion to the issue.

To summarize what I want to be able to do:

  1. By default, have the session cookie expire upon closing of the browser. This, becuase many of my users login from public computers, and I don't want to have to trust them to remember to logout. This is done in the settings.php file, if I understand correctly.
  2. Have an option to "stay logged in" in the login panel whereby users can select a box that will either over-ride, or set a new cookie with a session-expiry time that I (the site admin/webmaster) have specified. This doesn't need to be adjustable in the user interface—I'm happy to set it somewhere in the code.

Is there an existing patch for this which I haven't yet found? Can this be done by adding code to the user module that will overwrite the session cookie set in the settings.php file?

Thanks for any help!

That SO should be the default behavior of Drupal. Right now its retarded. We can't rely on users clicking 'log out' on public terminals, and I shouldnt have to hack the code for such a basic function :(
