I keep getting this 500 "Internal Server Error"

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, support@supportwebsite.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

How do I fix this error? It's starting to happen more and more but it didn't use to happen at all.

That's a generic "something stuffed up" error message for ALL server matters. Without more information it would be impossible to suggest a fix.

What server? What version? What's in the error logs? Did the error get logged?

Flying blind.

It's on a shared server but I don't believe it's a server issue. The server isn't timing out or anything and it seems to be javascript or script errors with the extension .js. Where do I go from here?

Wy do you "think" that? For starters ... .js files are served "as is" to the client and executed within the browser ... so there is absolutely NOTHING special about javascript when it comes to the server.

Until you put the effort into checking the server error logs, you're just guessing and wasting your/my time.

Ask GoDaddy ... its' their problem now.

I'm not seeing it in the Recent log entries. Go daddy claims the problem is with my .htaccess file.

While it's certainly possible you have an error with your .htaccess file, this sounds (to me) like typical deflection crap from a dubious web host.

I suppose you get what you pay for, I'd suggest "moving house".

You did that and they said it's your .htaccess file.

They are probably right.

Simple troubleshooting:

If you remove the .htaccess file, does the 500 error go away?
This will temporarily disable clean-urls, but it will 100% prove the problem.
Why didn't you try that?

The Drupal .htaccess assumes "Allow Override All" on the server. GoDaddy or other hosts may not allow that on all accounts. Did you check that godaddy meets the Drupal minimum requirements listed in the handbook?

Did you not search for this issue?

Assuming your code and db are intact, internal server errors can occur if you are using shared hosting due to memory and cpu usage limits.

Sounds like resource issues to me. The problem is that, whilst website software has exploded into interactivity and social networking, which takes far more resources, the shared hosting accounts have not adjusted for it. So what's changed on your server? Even if you haven't added modules and your own userbase is not growing...

· your host is adding new accounts to your server until it reaches maximum capacity
· other existing customer's websites are growing in users and content everyday.

I tried for a year to find a cheap shared host which ran even one drupal site.
I never found one, even those that allow you 96mb of memory.

A couple of months ago I got a $200 per year VPS host.
I can run three or four small/moderate drupal sites on it without worrying about resources.
Plus you get all the extra power from being able to access your virtuoso container and whm.
Well worth it in my opinion.

You've "hit the wall" with what you can achieve on an overloaded shared host, you never have any guarantee that resources will be available to you.

With a VPS, you know what your resources are, and if they run out ... well ... you've outgrown your current set up and need to grow again.

Your issue isn't how much RAM you've asked for in Drupal, 96M should be enough ... your shared host just couldn't give it to you.

A VPS is a "virtual private server" ... it is usually a little more expensive than shared hosting, and you don't need anything but your credit card.

I very seriously doubt the issue is with the .htaccess, unless something has changed the file lately. I don't think you "just start" having problems with .htaccess.

I'd bet almost anything that you're problem is the php mem. I buy my domains from GoDaddy, but I really, really do not like their hosting. I've been with InMotion Hosting for 5 years and could not be happier. I have 5 sites active with them and on the two bigger, more popular one's, my mem is at 768. Prior to that it was at 128 and I error 500's and server timeouts. After they bumped it up, I've not had a single issue. And I'm on shared hosting! InMotion is just awesome.

I'd suggest switching. Get away from GoDaddy. Moving your site is easy too. Yep, I'd bet it's your memory.

Clearly they've overloaded their hardware with too many accounts and you aren't getting your moneys worth. This is a pity, because 100 unique visitors is not much of a server load.

"Cheap and nasty" is how I'd describe it. You might have better luck with a smaller company ... one local to where you live ... with a human being somewhere in the support chain you can ask questions and get non-deflective answers.

I am considering moving to another host.. with Godaddy the 500 errors happen often, whenever they want to, for no specified reason, while at other times same functions work :( It is clear that they are overloaded and because of that site suffers.. It is impossible to work on the site, yet alone have users log in and create any content... Site loads fine for non loged in users because of boost module, but once you log in, you're left to the mercy of whether or not the server will get overloaded with other accounts at the time you are in... :(

You should switch. Over the past month, one of my bigger sites gets from 1,000-1,700 uniques per day, or somewhere around 42-50,000 per month... give or take a bit. And that's not really all that much. With InMotion Hosting, there's rarely a hitch. Every once in awhile on say, like a weekend evening of Friday night, it'll take a few seconds longer to load... but overall still very quick.

At 100 visits per day, you definitely do not need a VPS. Your site will perform fine on a "GOOD" shared host. I'm on a shared business plan with InMotion, with 5 sites, and even in peak time where there's like 200-300 members online, there's no problem.

I'm not "campaigning" for them, but have just had real good luck and have been satisfied. Check 'em out!

I just tried the "Drupal Tweaks" module.. and WOW, big change in performance.. either that or just a good day.. lol :)
I will report back, .. so far i am amazed as to how different the site runs while loged in...

increased the php memory :D, database and checked for issues. I noticed a difference right away... But will report back.. who knows, maybe it was just a good day with godaddy.. :) For now.. definitely less 500 error pages, site loads little faster when loged in. When not loged in I use boost module, another excellent one. The site loads like any other html for a visitor, so that's very cool.. and that now it works a LOT better (the cron function) after increasing the php.. So, check them out, let me know how they do for you.
Oh, it will let you increase the memory to any number.. try at 768 for example or 896 :)

How is your site running?
I could not take it anymore. Tweaks helped, but I had to move to another host :)
I went with hotdrupal.com
No tweaks allowed there!, but you will not need them !
I'm very happy with the way my site runs. It's been a couple of days only.. but there is a huge difference.
I recommend them if you're still having troubles and want to move :)

Thanks for the message it's been awhile but yeah I'm still having the same problems =( and what makes it even worst is that I'm running three drupal sites now (wasn't planned). So I'm currently looking for better hosting. What type of hosting do you now have? I thought about switching to another shared hosting but then thought it will probably not make much of a difference (I maybe wrong) so I've been searching for a good cheap VSH. Go daddy's poor hosting is killing me and I'm glad you found something better. I will also look into hotdrupal.com as well.

I am using Dreamhost for a few years right now, and they have excellent support. About a month ago my server became very busy, so I just asked them to move me to another server, which they did in 2-3 hours from my request. My site flies now.

With the $9.95 package, you get 96MB memory, I thought it might be low, but my site is running smooth and fast. I'm very happy so far. :)
I believe with that package you can have up to 3 sites.
Their support is very fast as well.
Just search them on the forum here and you'll see what people are saying.. I think everyone that has them is happy. :)

As you can see a few post above, I was a happy Dreamhost customer, but then my site outgrew their package and I preferred to move to Servint. Seems that VPS is much faster than shared hosting :P

Find .htaccess file in root of drupal install.

Uncomment the line that says RewriteBase /

Voila!

The issue, by the way, is occurring because you're using the Path module to create clean urls, which requires the Apache RewriteBase function.
