Hey Guys,

Guys I have Just launched my site. I plan to add a blog to It. I know we have Option using drupals blog module or other blogging Platform like Wordpress.

I just wanted to know which approach would be best. If I go for other blogging Platform, I will have to take care of the themeing.

If I go for drupal's Blog module, Will I get all the facilities that I would get if I used other blogging Platform like SEO optimisation???

Please Comments/Reviews/Suggest everything for and against both the topics.

Also, If you have done or are aware of such integration, Please provide few links for me to have a Look.

Thanks alot Guys.

Wordpress is specialized in blogging, so it has more advanced blogging features and easier to administer than drupal. If you want integration with drupal site, it would be easier to use only drupal for blogging.

I have no idea what "seo optimisation" means in this context. btw, since the 'O' in 'SEO' is 'opimisation', 'seo optimization' is just plain silly, lol.

I always recommend using drupal over 3rd party integrations-- they're never perfect and not worth the overhead.

Guys,

Any other comments/suggestion/thoughts????

I would appreciate if anybody could please point me to a few links as examples of both.

Mr WorldFallz I have double checked the language, grammar, construct and all that. However, I am really open to your english classes, the sample of which you offered us in your previous post to the thread.

WorldFallz's husband offers English classes? :)

Here's the deal with other blogging platforms: They won't be Drupal content. If you want to promote a blog post to the front page, nope. If you want to use a blog post in a view, nope. If you want to cross post a blog into a group, nope. If you bridge, your blogs will be just blogs and nothing but. They will be connected to your site only by theming and possibly by user login but they will be separate.

If you use Drupal for your blogs, your blog posts are first class citizens. You can use them like any other content. Drupal isn't a specialized blogging platform so you will need to do more work and possibly do without some features for this flexibility.

The choice is yours.

Michelle

PS: Lighten up. She was just ribbing you a bit. :)

I gotta tell you, wordpress is a great blogging platform. It is very easy to setup and get going.

BUT!! everytime I use it, I find myself (or clients) wanting another 'section' to the site. Like a newsletter section or a latest news section, etc, etc... While this isnt that hard to do (create category, and loop for just that category) I just always find myself wishing I had drupal. I could simply make a new content type and clone a blog view... done.

Wordpress is great if all you want is a blog, once you get much past that... drupal blows it out of the water.

Save yourself sometime in the long run and just do it with drupal.

Edit: you said just got your site up and want to add a blog... Is your site already built in drupal? If so, adding a blog is really really easy.

Thanks for today's "smile o' the day".

And yes I was kidding-- but I also think people throw the 'seo' acronym around far too often without having a clue what it means. This was just a really obvious instance and I couldn't resist. ;-)

It wasn't meant to be reflection on the poster's english-- it was meant to be an insult to the acronym-- truly sorry if it appeared that way.

Especially Michelle and that0n3guy as this is the type of suggestion and opinions I was looking for.

See I could not think of linking the blog content the ways you two have summarized.

Thanks again folks

Hey folks,

Nobody answered this completely and I too forgot due to distractions. My question was only half answered and other half laughed out at. Whatever or However it is, it is still a valid question.

So the question which was notanswered is If I go for drupal's Blog module, Will I get all the facilities that I would get if I used other blogging Platform like SEO optimisation???

Comments? Suggestions?

that0n3guy’s picture

Asking if it will have all the facilities that other blog platforms have is a pretty general question. I would say that yes, it does have most of the features.

Drupal does have pretty good out-of-the-box seo, but seo isnt really something you just 'get' in a feature. Its a process.

I'll just go ahead and say it.... yes. If you set Drupal up correctly for SEO and make sure your content is packed with descriptions, etc. and use Drupals awesome ways of integrating the extra pieces of your content into the site for the purpose of SEO... like with views designed for it.... it has all the SEO another blogging platform would have. The only exception would be if there was a blogging platform that gave you statistical readouts of what your keyword mixes were, their competitiveness, and reporting of any 'black hat' stuff happening in your content, then that blogging platform would be superior to Drupal for SEO.

appraveen’s picture

Please don't mistake me people, but what I have observed mostly is that I have rarely seen a drupal site OR any other platform for that matter, that appears in a search. For Example, If I search for java based API, lets take java.util.List for that matter, I would find more wordpress posts than any other platform. And that's true with any search term and thats why I asked about it.

OR

Is it the case that search engines give a higher preference to blogs, I guess no, else other blogging platforms should also show up almost to the same extent as WP does.

OR

Is it the case that since the number of blogs is more than anything else on the internet so search engines show a coresponding jumble-up of search results?

I think the root of your questions have to do with your misunderstanding of how SEO works. I think you should do some more research on what SEO is and how to do it and that will answer your question.

Wordpress can be really bad at SEO, so can drupal.

They can both be really good at it. SEO doesnt have as much to do w/ system you use as the user using the system.

I've been quite happy with Drupal's built-in blogging functionality. One thing I discovered recently is that in mysite.com/admin/build/pages/list you can enable the System Page called blog_user. It helps me learn about arguments a little more with the path blog/%user.

And since it's in a Panel, it's very quick to add other features like Profile and Twitter info. Here's my blog as an example: http://taipeitechclub.com/blogs/spangaroo

The only thing that I'm having trouble with is this: how do I make user posts + comments show up within this System Page. If someone clicks on the title the post goes to a basic node view, like this: http://taipeitechclub.com/blogs/spangaroo/taiwan-send-annual-hi-tech-tal...

As you can see my Profile and Twitter info has been removed. If I need to create another Panel Page + View to show the entire Blog post + comments similar to what blog/%user is doing that's fine. But I'm not exactly sure how to tackle this or what arguments to use for the path to this page: blogs/%user/[title-raw]?

I'm venturing into territory a little more technical than what I'm used to so if anyone has any tips I'd be very grateful.

I'm currently working on a guide for blogging with Drupal. It's far from finished, but hopefully already useful:

If your site is in drupal its better to add blog using drupal.
If your site is static wordpress can be considered.

The simplest thing will be creating a blog at blogger.com and setting ur custom doamin name there.
ie. blog.yourdomainname.com will point to ur blogger blog.

Also if you are planning for multiple user blogs,
go for wordpress mu.

I use Wordpress for a long time(more than 2 years) and right now I understand that Drupal is more powerfull as a web-site and blog platform.

Drupal have a lot of features to create not just a blog, but a more exposed blog-site...

Thanks alot guys for all the comments and suggestion.

So from this discussion, I understand that if its only blog and nothing else, Wordpress is one of the best choices to make. However, if you need anything more than that, may be sort of a main site and a add-on blog, then, maybe a CMS like drupal would do the magic.

GREAT THANKS EVERYBODY......

that0n3guy’s picture

Yep, but there is one problem.... you always need more than a blog... maybe not at first... but eventually you will.

In my opinion drupal is amazing for blogging.

It offers a lot of customizability once you get your head around it, and the best part is it doesn't look like every other blog on the web so it stands out.

Was wondering which way you went with either drupal for blogging or did you use wordpress? How did the launch go?
