Performancing.com is a group of blogging professionals who write about how to blog. They use Drupal. They also compared 10 blogging platforms for the purpose of blogging and Drupal comes out well (#2). Their site is interesting especially because of how well they are building a community almost overnight. By advertising on sites like BoingBoing.net and Technorati.com, they are generating tons of traffic, and lots of people are signing up and leaving comments to their quite interesting and plentiful posts. Worth checking out for many reasons.

okay, any list like this is bound to have critic. I dislike the fact that alle criteria are weighted the same. For example, the cost of the license is binair criterium that is not even counted for. While one could use multi criteria analyses for having ordinal ("apple") and binary ("peer") criteria to sum up to "fruit" and then select which one is the best...

But still, at least they included Drupal and we are just one (well, two) points short of beating WordPerfect

Wordpress:

Installation consists of downloading the zipped files, creating a MySQL database and user for the blog and editing the configuration file. Finally there's an installation script to guide you through finishing the job.

Drupal:

Installation consists of downloading and uncompressing the zip and following the instructions in the "install.txt" file. No easy and attractive wizard to hold your hand here. It's not tricky to setup thankfully but the others in the review try harder to make life easy.

How did he know what to do in the wordpress installation? Who told him which configuration file to edit? There wasn't an easy an attractive script to do that for him in wordpress either.

Reviews are reviews, they are just opinions by the opinionated.

You can blame me for Performancing running Drupal :)

I've been using it for a couple of years now, i *think* since version 3 -- i'd not even consider using something else for most kind of sites -- it's just ideal.

Though chris' points about installers and so forth are well made. Drupal will find it hard to reach the kind of ubiquitous blog platform status WP has without making it easier for non-geeks to install.

Thanks for the post Russell, I hope you all enjoy the site!

Bloggers might also need "super easy abilities" to blog, tag and use trackback and categories.

It's easy to blog with Drupal right out of the box. But tags and trackback take module installation.

IMHO, if "ease of installation" were really the only obstacle, "Near ubiquitous blog platform usage" would arrive 2 year after a super easy installation were available.

We (WordPress) create the config file from a web form if the permissions are right on the host. I still think we could be a lot better, though.

Nice to see you in this neck of the internet =)

Great work on WP! It's nice to have someone setting the standards for "easy to use".... keeps us focused.

Hope to see you around Drupal.org more often.

Cheers,

It's a blog about making money from blogs. It is just BEGGING the question, how do you plan to monetize the site itself? I've noticed the ad's on several high profile sites and there is no doubt you're aiming to build a strong community. I had planned to email you and ask these questions, I think a great article would be a self-inspection of the rapid success of performancing.com and future plans for monetizing it (though it is perhaps too early for such an article yet).

That said, it's a great site and a daily visit for me now. I, personally, am sick of seeing Adsense or the other popular programs plastered all over everyones blogs and its nice to visit a clean site that isn't trying to lure me into clicking adsense links and seems more interested in delivering quality content.

keep up the good work.

Hey Mork,

it's a little early for us to be discussing our future monetization plans, but you can rest assured that we wont be putting ads on our site, nor will we be tricking you into anything :)

But you're right, a strong community is the #1 goal for the short to mid term.

Glad you like the site!

I think Ning does a really great job of getting things rolling for new community oriented websites. Their blogging section and multimedia support is pretty cool and nothing is as complicated as Drupal. That being said it is not as flexible or powerful as Drupal either, but for most sites and newbies is all that horsepower really needed up front?
