One of the sites we are working on at the moment really involves three different audiences. There is potential overlap, particularly between two of them, but nevertheless one could clearly identify each authenticated user as belonging or not belonging to the interest group for a body of material. Having been involved in another site, where I did not do the setup, which uses Organic Groups to provide e-mail notification for people in various interest groups, I naturally think that using OG here might be a good idea since it would provide an easy and automated way for people to be informed of new content in their area(s) of interest.
But, there is another wrinkle. Most of the material we want to be publicly readable by everyone, including anonymous users. There is some material in one of the interest groups, however, which should not be publicly available because it includes material which should only be available to members of that community. This community is an e-mail list run by another site and this is derivative material.
From a quick read of the project information, it looks like the Secure Site module might be able to handle this for us, but I'm wondering if this pair of modules would be the recommended solution for this fairly simple management issue or whether there is some simpler way to get the job done.
Drupal 6.9 using Marinelli theme, if that matters.

Part of og default functionality include the ability to designate nodes as public or private. You can also designate the default to be public or private. If most posts are private, have the default be private and unless the author changes it to public, the post will be private.

Is that new in 6? I don't see any such flags in the site we have using 5.15 with OG.

Not at all-- I'm running og on a d5 site. I don't have access to it atm, but I think it might require enabling an additional core og module.

There seem to be quite a few additional modules! Although there are many that haven't made it to 6 yet. I have gathered some info on OG, its "friends", and Secure Site and will talk over with the site manager what she really wants and needs to do and what she is willing to put up with to do it. I think there is only a very small amount of content she wants to restrict ... especially since part of the point of the site is to make her work more noticeable! It might be that simply putting that content in password locked PDFs or using Secure Site with a password for appropriate users would be sufficient without OG, but I see potential for OG as well, especially in terms of e-mail notification of new content by interest area.

In that case, another option might be http://drupal.org/project/protected_node

OK, I've got it now. The other site didn't have OG Access Control enabled since the nature of the site is wanting everything as available as possible. OG there is a means for interest area notifications of new content. Having enabled Access Control on the new site, I see the options and it looks like that should do the trick. Thanks!
