apologies for what i'm sure will sound like an awfully generic question, but i'm wanting to wade into the CCK waters, and need to know if what i'm envisioning is even possible.

in a nutshell, i'm trying to develop a site that will allow members to do the following things:

1 - register (thats a given ;) )

2 - create groups, with their location (zipcode) as a group field (organic groups modification?)

3 - allow members to search for groups based on location (zipcode) and sign-up for those groups within a certain proximity to their own location

obviously a very generic description, but i wanted to know if this is possible (first), able to be created exclusively with custom forms, ie no coding (second), or if this will require some custom PHP coding (third)...

im no expert by any means, but ive dabbled in PHP, and have been programming in other languages for almost 10 years...

Hi there steveadamo :)
Like others said, Drupal is a framework, they give us a framework to use, and its up to us to build our own thing out of it. I mean we can actually do this, with a knowledge of the framework and a web programming knowledge. It is Possible! :)

I would try location enabling og group nodes. Check out the http://drupal.org/project/location module.
