I found this article for how to change the code of drupal so that the index page can have a different template from the inside pages. http://www.lullabot.com/articles/hacking_phptemplate

Then I realized it was for an older version of drupal. Does anyone know if this can still be done in 6.0? I am creating a real estate site and I want the front page to be a bit different from the inside pages. Thank you for your help.

You can actually do this without any code in template.php now. Drupal will look for a template file named page-front.tpl.php and use that for your front page. You can find out more about Drupal default template file names in the D6 theme guide.
